The planet gets invaded once again this weekend, in the unsettling form of Keanu Reeves, as a remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still" arrives in theaters.
A lot has changed since the alien Klaatu first landed on Earth in the 1951 original. The human race has abused the Earth's natural resources to the brink of ecological calamity, while the world's financial markets are on the verge of collapse. We live in a time when Paula Abdul won't go away, and Sidney Poitier can't seem to make a comeback. And the trans fat has been removed from Girl Scout cookies, making them far less delicious.
At this point, would an alien takeover really make things worse?
This year's election proved that voters are dying for change. And there's no greater change than a Borg assimilation. With that in mind, we've decided to rethink several iconic alien invasions in television and movie history, instead considering the potential positives. We've also included the effects of the takeover on our standard of living, the form of government each alien would rule under and a quote for use on campaign T-shirts.

This flick is on my “do not watch” list.
Honestly, who writes this crap?
FAIL
great idea remake an classic film without any classic actors
good move
Well, it IS San Freakcisco.
This guy’s brain probably looks like swiss cheese from his multi-year bout with that nasty bath house glory hole strain of HIV.
It is on my “Don’t Pay to see it” list.
I may watch it when it comes to cable.
...I’m all for second amendment rights, but, to those of you that bring shotguns to UFO sightings, refrain from brandishing yer weapons. They might be here to pick me up!!!!
Then this means we can nuke China for all it’s pollution? Or that everybody can nuke us for our carbon?
The original was pretty good, if a bit preachy.
When I heard Keanue was going to star in this, I thought he was going to be Klaatu.
From the previews, I guess I was right.
Wait for it to be on Bravo as a comedy/reality show.
"Might as well come clean. Our new President will be a foreigner. Get used to it; it won't be so bad."
HUH?
What about good old-fashioned movies like "War of the Worlds" (even the Tom Cruise remake) or "Independence Day" in which one way or another, we fought off the invaders?
I want the official Pajamas Media review of the film before I chuck in my 2 cents worth but the SF Chronicle article makes it more difficult to watch for this potential preachy film. I don;t want to be sermoned except on weekend mass.
KLAATU BARADA NIKTO
Keanu Reeves playing an alien?
Typecasting.
Old Man: Why doesn't the government do something, that's what I'd like to know.
George Barley: What can they do, they're only people just like us.
Old Man: People my foot, they're democrats.
“Keanu Reeves playing an alien?
Typecasting.”
Not much of a stretch for him...his acting seems to indicate that he can’t emulate the full range of human emotions. He might have been better cast as Gort.
Kyle Chandler is cool. Liked him on Early Edition, like him on Friday Night Lights. Robert Knepper is awesome. T-Bag! Jennifer Connelly was one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood (last I saw her, she was a bag of bones), and James Hong rocks.
Still, ain’t seeing it.
Beware Al Gort.
