As the federal probe into Gov. Rod Blagojevich intensified in recent weeks, editors and reporters at the Chicago Tribune balanced a competitive story with a rare request from U.S. Atty. Patrick Fitzgerald's office: To hold off on what they uncovered until a key phase in the investigation could be carried out . . . Since October, the Tribune has broken several stories on the Blagojevich probe, but in some cases withheld information because of the government's request.

Fitzgerald is a Democrat - Do you think it had anything to do with his request to hold off this story Before the election?
Fitzgerald is a straight shooter no matter the party and to release details of the investigation before the Grand Jury returned indictments would have been stupid on his part. This man took on the Mafia and won so anything thinking because he is a member of a Party it is going to make any difference need to think again.
There was much more to the Libby story or Pres Bush wouldn’t have let Libby off the hook who was about to testify when he was facing prison time. He got the nod from the President and shut up after that. Just what was he about to tell Fitzgerald is what a lot of us would like to know that didn’t have our heads buried in the sand.
It apparently did not stop The Chicago Tribune from warning Team Obama though! Can we get some REAL JUSTICE in America please?
What makes you think Fitzgerald is a Democrat? Looks to me that he’s gone after both parties throughout his career, and he was appointed as a US Attorney by a Republican President on the advice of a Republican Senator.
Seems to be a straight shooter to me.
*yawn*
Brit Hume spoke to the unfortunate reluctance of the national media to expose Chicago corruption prior to the election. Good point. Now they know from whence Obama has come.
I don’t know or care about Fitzgerald’s politics. If you read his background you’ll see that he’s proven himself to be a hard-nosed prosecutor who does his job admirably and pursues the truth, wherever it leads. I’ve seen no evidence that political factors influence his job performance, despite all the baseless noise to the contrary in the Plame case. Libby lied, was convicted, sentenced, and President Bush opted not to pardon him. End of story.
We should have more prosecutors like Fitzgerald.
I think it’s good that details were not published at the time, so as not to compromise the ongoing investigation.
There are some time when gov’t secrecy is a good thing.
Liberals are selective in their outrage about secrecy. Liberals were happy when the N.Y. Times published key details about the secret data mining surveillance of terrorists communications, because it made life difficult for Bush and the ongoing war on terror.
I think liberals are in favor of exposing any secrets that will hurt Republicans.

Compromised the investigation, or compromised the election?
OH Really?
He knew that Plame was NOT a bona fide "undercover agent"
He knew that Libby and Rove did NOT leak anything.
He knew that Novak was the leaker.
And he knew it early on and deliberately dragged it out. And WHO benefited from his crappy "investigation? Why, the DemoncRATS, of course!
So, don't be saying that creep is a straight shooter".
bttt
Huh? I thought he was a Republican?
When Fitzgerald indicts Obama I will believe he is a straight shooter. I guess I will not hold my breath. I think Blago was a sacrificial lamb.
My guess is Fitz will parachute out of the DOJ to a nice gig at Kirkland & Ellis (mega law firm & Obama supporters) with a partnership gig. I hope I am wrong but my guess is almost everyone has been bought in this country.

You are absolutely correct. His big press conference was a farce.
He lectured the reporters about how Scooter threatened national security, how it was such a big deal. He kept throwing the word "classified" out in every other sentence. The word 'classified' is not a category of classification. There's only Official use only, Secret, Top Secret, Confidential, Restricted, and Unclassified. And Unclassified is not really a classification either. Fitzgerald knew he was being deceitful.
Fitzgerald played to the ignorant press people good and the uneducated public. The only case he had against Libby was a process crime and that is questionably dubious. Libby only was convicted because of a partisan DC jury and who made political statements after the trial.
