Left-lane slowpokes drive you crazy? (Some states are cracking down.)
MSN Money ^ | 12/10/2008 | Christopher Solomon

In these days of longer commutes and simmering tempers, nothing seems to set off already-testy motorists like the left-lane camper -- the guy or gal who drives in the passing lane and bars faster drivers from easily passing. Web sites have cropped up to educate other drivers, or to vent. There's a (somewhat painful) YouTube song called "Keep Right."

Even bigwigs get frustrated. Pennsylvania Gov. Edward Rendell, weary of having his limo slowed down by such left-lane pokies, ordered an aide to have the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission install signs a few years ago reading "Keep Right, Pass Left. It's the Law."

And now some states are cracking down on left-lane campers, both to keep traffic moving and to tamp down the road rage that goes from zero-to-60 faster than ever before.

That's not just a pretext. Last year, a driver was arrested on Interstate 79 outside Pittsburgh after allegedly brandishing a semiautomatic pistol at a driver who was on his tail.

Well, in some parts of Texas, a car with california plates speeding down the interstate, is bait..... and our Troopers love to fish. ;^)

I think that is a good law! As I said earlier, I give tractor trailers a wide berth because I know they are hauling stuff I might want - but they can obey the same laws I’m obeying and show a little courtesty themselves.

I take it you are one of the folks this article speaks of...

It’s common sense, and common courtesy. If you look in your rear view and you’re holding up traffic, and there is no one ahead of you, get the hell out of the way...

Do exactly the speed limit if you so wish in the right lane like you’re supposed to. People pass on the left.

Common sense...

It’s not the “fast lane,” it’s the PASSING LANE. There are a lot of jerks who think if they just drive fast enough, they can stay in the left lane.

no harm, no foul. I dont get in the left lane unless I am truly in a hurry, and am willing to maintain the flow already there.

But yes, the faster cars are always, not just usually, the bait cars, on the freeways around my locality.

Just took a car trip with the family to san diego from sacto last month, and at least once an hour the car I saw swoosh past me was on the side of the road further up ahead getting written up. When followed discreetly, the police also swoosh past me on the other car's tail.

By golly, you’re right!@

Going faster than the speed limit in the left lane isn’t passing after all, is it!

Not if you’re being passed by people on the right, or end up passed by people waiting for you to get your fat ass back in the right lane where it belongs.

>>What gets me is when there is someone in the left lane, and he is NOT passing the ones in the center or right lanes. And if he is at speed limit or lower, then EVERYONE behind has to paintly wait for SOMEONE to speed up or slow down!

>>If I happen to be in the right lane and this happens, then I deliberately speed up or slow down to make way for the faster cars. (saint that I am)

>>And why, when we pass a slow poke, do we always look over to see what kind of driver it is??

Strange, I don’t remember posting in this thread already.

*chuckle*

Feels like a minor sort of heroism to be the noble one, LOL. And a look more lingering than polite at the slowpoke on the left, you betcha. Sometimes accompanied by a shaking of the head over some ppl’s mamas not teaching them any manners.

Concerning “driven by Italians,” they drive way too fast for conditions, that is true. However, they are the greatest drivers as a group in the world, as far as I am concern. And Americans are the worst.

We did not come upon a single accident either in Rome or Sicily in 10 days in driving conditions that would have produced at least 100 collisions in my state under the same circumstances.

Well, the greatest thrill ride I've ever been on in my life - beating any rollercoaster anywhere - was a taxicab ride in Rome.........

"If I am already doing 70, dont expect me to pull over when the speed limit is 65"

Come on Race.... we both live in CT and we both know that even the friggin state patrol drive 80 on I95.

You ride yourself in the left lane at 70 and you can certainly expect to see the front end of my SSR shoved up your @ss.

Show some simply courtesy and move it over. The left lane is for PASSING

"Do note that Connecticut is loaded with left lane exits. Sometimes people in Wallingford or Hartford HAVE to slow down and be in the left hand lane"

Noted

I also live in CT and the left exits are not so common as to cause need for you to be in that left lane for any more than a mile.

Other than preparing to exit or to pass, you need to move it over

"They are far more dangerous whipping in and out of each lane almost hitting people"

Get real... if the arrogant and senile would move their @ss out of the left lane, there'd be a lot less need for "weaving".

Move it over unless you're passing

We’re sorry your peepee never got as big as you wanted it to. Quit taking it out on everyone else and pull over to the right lane you sanctimonious jerk.

"my question is the following: are we speaking of drivers going under the posted speed limit in the left lane or are we talking drivers doing the speed limit in the left lane?"

This is not "nitpicking", it's Irrelevant.

Unless you are passing, move over to the right. You're not special and you have no God given right set the cruise control and hang in the left lane just so you're not bothered by those cars entering at the entrance ramps. The left lane is for PASSING and only for passing, so show some common courtesy
