Is "Senate candidate 5" Obama's state senate mentor?
Power Line ^ | December 9, 2008 | Scott Johnson

Posted on 12/09/2008 8:36:01 PM PST by St. Louis Conservative

"We were approached 'pay to play.' That, you know, he'd raise me 500 grand. An emissary came. Then the other guy would raise a million, if I made him (Senate Candidate 5) a Senator."

With these taped words, Gov. Blagojevich may have placed a major Illinois political figure -- Senate Candidate 5 -- in legal jeopardy. But who is Senate Candidate 5"?

Ben Smith of The Politico tells us that, based on the tape, the mystery candidate answers to the following description:

-publicly reported to be interested in the open Senate seat

- not who Blagojevich thought Obama wanted

- not someone with whom, by November 10, Blagojevich had a "long, productive discussion"

- someone with fundraising wherewithal who could produce something "tangible up front"

- someone Blago was "getting a lot of pressure" not to appoint

- someone with whom Blago had "a prior bad experience...not keeping his word"

Speculation centers around two prominent African-American politicians, Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. and Emil Jones, president of the Illinois State Senate. Smith notes, though, that Jackson isn't particularly known as a fundraising specialist, whereas Jones has money in his State Senate account that could be transferred to Blagojevich.

Jones and Obama had a close relationship when Obama served in the Illinois State Senate. It was Jones who eventually took Obama under his wing and made sure that key pieces of legislation developed by others had Obama's name on them. Thus, it's interesting if true (this is speculation upon speculation) that Obama didn't want his old mentor to get a U.S. Senate seat. It's also understandable, inasmuch as Jones (like Obama for that matter) is connected to Tony Rezko.

Me too. He seems like a weak man, and one who looks after himself. I don’t see him as a “good soldier”, i.e. someone who will take the fall for others, especially if those others are every bit as corrupt as him. I can certainly see Blago rolling over on folks in exchange for leniency if he is faced with many years in prison.

His wife is young and I would think he wants to keep her out of prison at all costs. On the other hand, he is a sociopath and may care only for himself.

All this comes to an abrupt halt as soon as Obamanation takes office and installs his AG. The justice system then begins its full scale assault on Republicans.

#5 couldn’t have been Emil Jones, who was Obama’s political mentor and he couldn’t have refused him. In fact, Jones was the one who said “I’m goin’ to make me a US Senator” when Obama ran for the Senate.

Jessie Jackass Junior was supposed to be on WLS tomorrow morning where he is a regular - but he cancelled for some reason. (Maybe he’s got to get with Axelrod to see what he remembers to forget?) You can see how he would not be Obama’s top pick. I’ll bet it’s JJJ. And good riddance.

It appears Blago has illusions of grandeur...he thought he would exact what he wanted out of Obama.

Now that none of his dreams are going to come true, he could turn bitter.

Expect an all out assault on everything about Blago’s character from every Democrat talking head available.

#5 couldn’t have been Emil Jones...

It was (is) indeed Emil Jones, who last Thursday said He'd be glad to accept appointment as senator. #1 is Valerie Jarett, who quit, but apparently is back in again. With Gov. Bag-O-shit out of the picture in a decision making sense, watch Durbin jump in and take charge.

It'll be enough for me that he never gets the Senate seat. But in order for that to happen it'll have to be filled by appointment. If it's a special election the Jackson has to be favored in the primary.

Best case is that Blago resigns or is impeached and Quinn appoints someone not metioned in the investigation.

"I hope Blagojevich sales out for a lesser sentence and takes a lot of big name Dems down with him."

His wife is also on the tapes and is implicated up to her ears. His father in law (big time politician in Chicago) is also implicated. He also has small children. The thought of Mommy, Daddy, and Grampa Mel going off to the big house has cracked men a lot stronger then Blago. Heads are going to roll and unless there are a bunch of sudden cases of Arkansaside this will haunt THE ONE like Whitewater haunted the Clintons.
