President George W. Bush said his belief that God created the world is not incompatible with scientific proof of evolution.
In an interview with ABC's "Nightline" on Monday, the president also said he probably is not a literalist when reading the Bible although an individual can learn a great deal from it, including the New Testament teaching that God sent his only son.
About creation and evolution, Bush said: "I think you can have both. I think evolution can you're getting me way out of my lane here. I'm just a simple president. But it's, I think that God created the earth, created the world; I think the creation of the world is so mysterious it requires something as large as an almighty and I don't think it's incompatible with the scientific proof that there is evolution."
"You know. Probably not. ... No, I'm not a literalist, but I think you can learn a lot from it, but I do think that the New Testament for example is ... has got ... You know, the important lesson is 'God sent a son,'" Bush said.
"It is hard for me to justify or prove the mystery of the Almighty in my life," he said. "All I can just tell you is that I got back into religion and I quit drinking shortly thereafter and I asked for help. ... I was a one-step program guy."
"I do believe there is an almighty that is broad and big enough and loving enough that can encompass a lot of people,"
Asked whether he thought he would have become president had it not been for his faith, Bush said: "I don't know; it's hard to tell. I do know that I would have been I would have been a pretty selfish person."

“To all who are attacking President Bush strong Christian faith”
I think you should re-read the Sermon on the Mount about the Pharisees (See Matthew Ch.5). Also read Matthew chapter 7:15~23 about false prophets. Ye shall know them by their fruits.
Besides being a big government liberal and a social liberal, Bush is a charlatan, a snake oil salesman, a moral relativist, a complete phony. Didn’t he say that we all - Muslim, Buddhist, Christian, satanist etc - worship the same God? Didn’t he appoint an open homosexual (complete with “partner”) as ambassador to Romania?
“Doesn’t the Vatican also hold this view? Do you not consider the Pope to be a Christian?”
I’m a reformed-leaning Protestant. I have no idea whether the Pope is a Christian. I hope he is, because most of my in-laws are Catholic.
Just because someone says they are a Christian, does not mean that they are a Christian. I do not believe that Ted Haggard is a Christian. Do you?

“I would conclude from your statement above that a diest would be disqualified, according to your view of the US Presidency?”
No religion is legally disqualified from the Presidency.
However, Christians are obligated to exercise discernment and measure our elected leaders against Biblical standards. We should NEVER choose the lesser of two evils nor select leaders who exhibit a moral and legal relativist view of the law.
“Only to the type who believe just like you do, or to all types with quite a wide range of beliefs, many much like the President?”
I don’t think a religious liberal or secular humanist would have stated it any differently.

“Being a Christian requires two things IMHO”
Where does repentance fit in with your two things?
Give him a break...it’s the media giving an interview. We are probably only seeing 14% of it.
Only God sees the Bible in its full meaning.
Those who claim to have arrived at the stable final meaning of the text are dangerously arrogant and not humbled by the spirit of God necessary for proper interpretation.
********
Very wise words.
It’s really very, very simple. Accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and saviour, acknowledging that He died for your sins. Seek a personal relationship with Him, and read God’s word to gain insight into the mind of God, to know how He wants us to live.
Oh....and you either believe the Bible is dead-accurate or you don’t. I do. I don’t doubt a single word of it, and I happen to be a rather educated, professional individual (rather than the stereotypical, if inaccurate, image of a redneck, Bible-thumping, wild-eyed ignoramus....the type we are told believe in the Bible’s inerrancy).
Bush continues to self-destruct during his last days in office.
******
Isn’t it amazing to watch? I’m trying to think of when he peaked- it must have been Nov.2004.
Even from election night 2000, he never had single day’s honeymoon. He cared more about being liked by his enemies than his friends. Sad to witness.
Jeb is a Roman Catholic. He will do fine in Florida for Senator.
“So you believe that a period described as a “day,” having a morning and evening means something besides a day?
What is the limit you see to God’s abilities that would prevent him from creating the Universe in the allotted time?”
I always wondered why God took an entire day to create everything...Then I head the preacher suggest that He was establishing a pattern for Man who was about to be inhabiting a creation bound by the contraints of time.
God needed the mere instant for a thought (and that’s a God-thought, not a man’s thought) to bring about any and all He created
Muslim terrorists just follow the Koran. Bush either isn’t familiar with what the Koran espouses or he is lying. Neither is acceptable to me.
What do you mean by Jesus gave us the religion of guy on guy action? What are you talking about? Are you a Christian?
Very well said.
