SYDNEY (Reuters) - Teachers using red pen to mark students' work could be harming their psyche as the color is too aggressive, according to education strategies drafted by an Australian state government.
The "Good Mental Health Rocks" kit, which was distributed this month to about 30 schools in Queensland state, offers strategies such as "don't mark in red pen (which can be seen as aggressive) - use a different color."
Other tips include structuring time for peer tutoring every day, apologizing to students when necessary and asking students to conduct a "personal skills audit" where they focus on their individual strengths rather than their weaknesses.
The kit, designed to help Queensland teachers address mental health in the classroom, suggests social and emotional wellbeing has been linked to young people's schooling, among other things.
The education aid has sparked a row in parliament, with deputy opposition leader Mark McArdle calling it "kooky, loony, loopy lefty policies."
But Health Minister Stephen Robertson, whose department devised the kit, said youth suicide was a serious issue.
"If mental health professionals determine that as one of a number of strategies teachers should consider, then I'll support them every day of the week," he told reporters recently. "This is not a matter for ridicule, this is serious."

Olé!
Look how it messed up countless prior generations counting back into antiquity.
What the heck is wrong with this generation?
1) I recall from my school days that I got a lot of REAL self-esteem from getting an essay back that had no red marks - except an A+ at the top.
2) Red is an aggressive color, and my favorite!
So marking a kid's paper in red leads to teen suicide??? Beyond parody.
IMHO, what is really bad for so many young people’s mental health is being imprisoned in school five days a week, nine months a year for 12 years, pinned to a desk for fifty minutes followed by 10 minutes of marching to class, followed by being pinned to a desk for 50 minutes, being forced to endure people their own age who are often cruel, violent, and disturbed, while being forced to memorize things that they probably will have no need to know once their sentence is over.
BULLSH.......t
This is why our kids are wussies and pansies today, because everyone thinks they are made of glass and everything harms then. Thats the same reason why some parents think spanking is child abuse!
Cut the crap!
This world is drunk with political correctness. Some kids need nuclear detination, not the color red to remind them they’re slackers.
It’s not the generation, it’s the governing morons who set the values to be followed. In order to succeed in “governing” arenas you must be dumber than a rock and loudly proclaim this by pronouncing crap like this important when it is not. Of course, you can’t seriously promote any curriculum that actually teaches intelligence and core values.
Whatever happened to those scratch n sniff stickers?
I remember in 4th grade if I got an A, Old Mrs. Ziegenhagen would put a popcorn or cherry scented sticker sticker
B was like licorice or lime
C we’d get autumn leaves
D was a car that smelled like gasoline, or dirty sneakers
and F was a sticker with a skunk on it.
Whats bad for your mental health is being yammered at all day long by nitwits like this.
Why ever would anyone trust their kids’ education to morons like these? These are your kids. You and they deserve better.
What the heck is wrong with this generation
Three words, Bunch of pussies. All this PCBS is really getting bad, I went to a shopping mall yesterday and had to use the restroom, well they no longer have men and women restrooms their now called Family restrooms anyone can use anyone they wish. I’m waiting for some female to not lock the door and some guy walk in,surprise.
I’ve been a college English instructor for years, and out of sheer meanness and rebelliousness, I’m sticking with red. I also use red font for comments I make on electronically submitted papers. It shows up much better than those limp pastels. I refuse to buy in to this mumbo jumbo.
Someone I know wore out Dr. LeCroy’s red pencil while in College.
I used something very close to that. My kids turned out great. Their papers were also marked in red.
So all of that road rage is the fault of the red lights.....now I get it.
If they tell the kids red is bad, they’ll believe it.
If they tell the kids red is good, same.
Red is the easiest to see. These people need to get a grip.
