A presidentially appointed "car czar" to oversee the restructuring of struggling U.S. automakers could be named as soon as this week if Congress approves an industry bailout, House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in an interview aired on Tuesday.
Pelosi told NBC's "Today Show" that she favored former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker, recently appointed by President-elect Barack Obama as his top adviser on steering the economy out of recession, to oversee restructuring of the industry.
Democrats and the White House are negotiating a bailout package of up to $15 billion in loans to rescue the Detroit Three companies. The final plan must be approved by Congress.

Agreed. I have sent my congressman an email stating that if they bail out the automakers, I will not buy another car from them. This is because it goes against every thing I believe in and I will not support that. The government has no business taking ownership stakes in private enterprise. They also would be picking sides in an industry, which I believe violates the equal protection clause. I believe it is unconstitutional for the feds to unequally support certain companies in the marketplace to the harm of others. What does this say to autoworkers that compete with the big three. It’s like they now have to compete against companies that are able to use their own tax dollars against them, for pete’s sake!
I will buy from Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Koreans, whatever.
You're kidding, right? In 2010, we won't even have a chioce of what kind of light bulb to purchase.
I agree. Instead of dubbing these unelected bureaucrats “czar”, I think we should start using “Fuhrer”. Doesn’t Car Fuhrer have a nice ring to it?
Dittos. Enjoy your day!
Whose going to head the Unification Board?
I guess it is delusional since I was wondering what a car dealer (Rick Hendrick) as Car Czar might be able to do with an industry I turned my back on 30 years ago.
A loan should be just that - a loan. The companies get a loan and they pay it back.
A loan with strings attached and a “car czar” is not a loan. It is a fascist takeover by the Democrats of American industry.
Not for you, but for those that voted Democrat, I’d love to see them be mandated to have their classic cars crushed at the junkyard
Once you get it, you have to fall back into a protect mode, family, friends and neighbors. Be prepared, you are not alone.
I don’t believe Ford will agree to this type agreement.
Alright, now step away from the logic before you get hurt.
And seeing that the ‘car czar’ is Bush’s idea, it seems we lost the country four or eight years ago and didn’t notice.
Like John Derbyshire wrote: “In 2000 I voted for George W. Bush because I was sure he must have a conservative bone in his body somewhere. In 2004 I voted for him as the lesser of two evils. Now I wouldn’t let the idiot park his car in my driveway.”
IIRC Hitler was the “car czar” of Germany designing the Volkswagen beetle.
Sig Heil! Maybe it’s Washington which is run by neo Nazis, and not those skinheads the media czars are constantly harping as dangerous...all this just to keep us distracted from the real and more seriously dangerous Nazis running DC?
“as in, hey American taxpayer serfs- YOU GO buy a hamster-powered/aaa battery-backup powered tin cup”
Please, that would never happen in this country.
PETA would pitch a fit. :)
He'll do what the gubmit tells him to do, that's the point.
We've all seen the effect of the CAFE standards, and that is just one regulation of thousands.
They're already admitting they want to force car manufactures to make cars that burn certain fuels, and that in a nut shell is what this is all about, not to mention the fact that it is fascism.
Fascism in America, UFB.
Fascist btw, don't grant choices, they force them on you. Think of the light bulbs you'll be purchasing in 2010
Gee, you are an eternal optimist.
What both companies need to do is file Chapter 11 here, to get rid of the Unions. But the Democrats are bought and paid for by the UAW as is Obama. (Who received 400 million in contributions from the Unions.) They WILL get their bail-out money from this Congress no matter what happens and the terms will be to build cars that Congress wants for the masses. No further choices.
Excellent, you made my day :) Thank you
I was one who avoided the obvious, in an air of optimism. It is much more comforting to have faith, and to understand what is occurring in these days and times.
This is just the beginning, though the basics for the downfall of the democracy/republic commenced decades ago.
