This Wednesday is the day when all gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgenders, and straight allies are encouraged to participate in a strike against the passing of Proposition 8 and the losses that the gay movement worldwide are experiencing.
On this day, participating involves calling out of work as "gay"(or as a gay ally), and using the time off to volunteer. It also involves eliminating yourself from the economy by keeping your computers (and the like) off, not making any purchases, and shutting down your company if you run one.
For those of us who can't afford to miss school or work, it is encouraged that we still find some time on December 10th to volunteer, or at least let people know that we support gay rights, including marriage, in whatever ways we can.
"I think it's a really interesting idea because it can show the impact that the gay community makes. My fear is that most people who take the day off won't do any volunteering, but just use the time off to stay home and relax. I think devoting the day to service is a really positive thing. We had four really huge losses in this election that were devastating on so many levels. If people have the ability, I would encourage them to support LGBT rights and human rights in general by volunteering, and even just by speaking out, whether at work, or class, or to a family member. It is a day to encourage people to do what they can to participate in the process in any meaningful way." -Sarah Parker-Holmes, Coordinator of the Center for Sexualities and Gender Diversity at USM.
"We've reacted to anti-gay ballot initiatives in California, Arizona Florida, and Arkansas with anger, with resolve, and with courage. NOW, it's time to show America and the world how we love. Gay people and our allies are compassionate, sensitive, caring, mobilized, and programmed for success. A day without gays would be tragic because it would be a day without love.
On December 10, 2008 the gay community will take a historic stance against hatred by donating love to a variety of different causes."-daywithoutagay.org
“donating love to a variety of different causes”
The world has seen their concept of donating “love”—screaming in your opponents faces, threats, intimidation, etc. They are the very personification of “love’,alright(gagg).
It was a pretty good movie......
Why stop at one day.
They could take off the rest of the year and the next 8 to really punish us.
If that happens Wednesday, I will do most of my store Christmas Shopping for my high ticket items.
Any store closed gets no business that day or any day.
It isn’t about them getting the right to marry. It is about them getting to redefine marriage for the 98% of us who are straight and prosecute us if we don’t go along with it.
If they take the other 364 days off from being gay the communities will save a lot o money in healt care costs.
The homosexual lifestyle, like the smokers, is a high health cost liability.
A local Mexican restaurant closed on that “nada, gringo” day they had a couple of years ago. They even had a sign explaining that is why they were closed. I haven’t been back since.
“I doubt many normal people will actually change their schedule out of sympathy”
Calling out of work is so “touchy feely”. So dramatic. So gay.
These people are so twisted they think only gays can love.
Eventually, "marriage" will be defined as "the person who you are having anal sex with most," or "the person you would be having anal sex with, if you weren't completely grossed out by the concept."
The illegal day off didn’t work that well up here in Wino counties.
Most worked.
Many who didn’t work, showed up at Home Depot to be an illegal for a day, half day or whatever.
The homosexual lifestyle, like the smokers, is a high health cost liability.
Keep in mind that gay men in this country only have a 42 year life expectancy, so taking one day off for them is really like taking off two days for a normal person.
Oh noes! - graphic designers, hair dressers, stylists and musical actors - all gone! What will happen to society?!? Do these gays have no compassion for their common man?
What a great day to go to Disney World! Oh, wait...it’d be closed. ;-)
BPE
I would never have gone to any store or restaurant that closed that day.
We are friends with a Mexican America, who owns a great restaurant and fish/meat market. He told his employees, all legals, if they didn’t show up for work that day. They would not be welcome back to his places of business.
Our yard guy told his workers the same and so did the lady who runs a legit home/office cleaning business and cleans our home.
I wonder what would be an effective way to signal that one is not supportive of this, other than just going about one's business normally. Maybe display signs reading Romans 1.26-27?
If I was a supervisor and my employees called in from home with an excuse they were “gay”, I’d file a charge of sexual harrassment against them for harrassing our company.
