I won't draw any conclusions before the incident report is released, but if there are in fact casualties on the ground and there was anything at all this pilot could have done to avoid them at his own expense, it will be a sad day for naval aviation.
Sort of both. From what I recall the Coronado facility handles all air traffic off the coast from Mexico up to the L.A. area (the Warning area) - both military flights, and commercial flights transiting it via the traffic lanes. Then, they’re handed off the the approach controllers at whatever field they are going to land at.
I know at least once my husband had a pilot go down off the coast. It was pretty hairy, he talked to the pilot all they way down until he ejected, and then called in the search & rescue teams, sending coordinates, etc. Then the investigation into the whole thing. (got a nice commendation for it, and a nomination for Sailor of the Year.
Miramar has its ATC. Actually it does control for southern Calif. air including commercial
Well....I suppose that is something, right?
They sure haven’t been running an investigative series on this questions as far as I know. I suppose that defending our constitution isn’t that big a deal to them.

Camp Pendleton has over 40,000 marines, and the busiest base in the nation. Then we have Marine Corp Recruit Depot, Miramar Air base, etc.
Then we are home to the 3rd. fleet, and many other Naval bases including Seals, Naval Air base, North Island.
Largest and state of the art San Diego Naval Hospital and Medical center.

I’ve been working in Virginia Beach temporarily for the last 3 months. I love the jets from Oceana....can’t get enough of them! There’s a business on Virginia Beach Boulevard with a sign that says something like “We support our military. If you don’t like the jets, go back where you came from.”
It was a real thrill being on the ship. It was the day before their final deployment to the Gulf. And the ceremony was on the flight deck. A real thrill ..
