I first became acquainted with the survivalist movement in the late 60s, through my ex-wife’s family, all of which were Mormons. One cousin in Ogden seemed to be on first name basis with several of the camp founders.

The non-mormons came along later around 1974 or so, as the movement gained notariety through news accounts.

"Oh yes it is, since you are the one who quoted scripture about doing such things."

Oh no it isn't ;o) - The scripture I posted was only in refutation of a statement in the article attributing the activity to an alleged commandment from God.

"In post 203 you were reasonable and sensible and then you blew it in post 205."

How did I 'blow it?' - There is a conversation running in this thread that you apparently have missed completely: Those that have made extensive plans, including stocking up on items that they have no plans to use themselves to be used for barter. (I understand this because I have done the same in the past)

My idea of "roughing it" is a motel without an attached restaurant or room service, and most people I know have a similar attitude.

And thus obviously nothing that I have posted refers to you, so why are you so agitated?

"You, on the other hand found fault with others who make preparations claiming they are going against scripture"

I've done nothing of the kind; all I've done is say not to attribute it to a commandment from God, as the article did.

I figured you were describing your own personal experience and making it sound like a fact, but really I was looking for something more to back up your claim.

I believe that of course some Mormons would have been part of the movement in the 70s, but I don’t buy your claim.

What I’m wondering is, if we leave the city for a rural area (family place), are we basically giving up our home and all its contents to the roving gangs to do with as they will?

Bump!!!
I am stocking up more as we speak. Just got about 25 lbs more of canned veggies.

Found a good site for dehydrated/freeze dried foods.
