Carmouche, Fleming in close race for 4th Congressional District seat
KTBS Channel 3 ^ | December 6, 2008

Democrats took aim at a reliably Republican congressional seat Saturday night as Paul Carmouche narrowly led Republican John Fleming in the hotly contested 4th Congressional District race.

With 63 percent of precincts reporting, Carmouche had 50 percent of the vote to 47 percent for Fleming.

Two independent candidates had the rest of the vote.

The winner succeeds Republican Congressman Jim McCrery, who decided not to seek re-election after 20 years in the House of Representatives.

Carmouche is retiring after being district attorney in Caddo Parish for 30 years. Fleming is a Minden physician and businessman.

No, only a plurality is required in 49 states in a general election. GA is the only once requiring a majority in a general election. Hence: Chambliss runoff

The part of Bossier Parish that has reported was not giving Fleming the margin he would need. Fleming also lost his home parish, just barely.

Ah this is not a runoff. There are no more federal General election runoffs in you don’t get 50%. It’s a regular general election. We took back a seat in November with just 48%.

Hurricane Whoeverit’snamewas delayed the LA primaries. They still have primary runoffs and in 2 house seats they were needed so they were held on election day in November with the GE’s delayed. Pretty stupid if you ask me.

Or better still, tell Catfish that you will never again eat in his restaurant. That would get his attention if you were from the area.

It doesn't look good for Anh. From my quick perusal of this it looks like precincts 8, 9, and 15 are where most of the votes in Orleans remain to be counted, and this map shows those areas to be generally around Gentilly and the 9th Ward. Hope I'm wrong.

Bulletin, those Bossier precincts did make a difference. Fleming has won by some 300 votes!!!!!!!! Catfish did not cause the defeat after all.

Ahem...Never mind. Looks like he just took the lead while I was typing that out. I guess Bossier Parrish was the right place and the right time for the Dr.

This is the most exciting House race that I recall in years. One parish made the difference. But had turnout been strong among Republicans, this uncertainty could have been avoided.
