The grassroots community organization, ACORN, is fighting for a new law it says will save lives.
"Stop the Bullet" is a campaign that would make it harder for felons to buy ammunition from stores.
When you buy a gun, gun shops have to run a background check first to make sure you're not a convicted felon.
Although it is also illegal for convicted felons to buy bullets, a background check is not required. As it stands now, gun shops aren't required to ask any questions before selling bullets, as long as the buyer is 18 and can present identification.
Community organizer for the local NC ACORN group, The Rev. Melvin Whitley, says it's too easy for criminals to buy ammo, and he plans to close that loophole.
ACORN'S initiative would expand the law to include ammunition, and may even include a requirement for bullet permits.
"The problem with the law is that it allows criminals to have access to bullets. And it's the bullets that's killing us," according to Whitley.
But gun shop owners disagree.
They feel it's just another way organizations are trying to take away their Second Amendment rights.
"We have to make it clear we are not talking about gun control, we're talking about bullets," said Durham City Council Member Howard Clement III.
Whitley stated his case before the Durham City Council Thursday in hopes that the council will add it to its legislative agenda. The council's legislative committee will determine whether the initiative has legs.
Whitley hopes to get the bill passed in a year.
According to the National Sports Shooting Foundation, at least 18 states have tried to pass laws to stamp bullets with serial numbers or tax individual bullets. None have passed.

Acorn needs to meet RICO
For the vast number of people who already have guns and won't give them up, limitation of ammunition and components to load ammunition are a logical step. One clear point on this is that limitation of ammunition is the next logical step AFTER banning guns - what this really indicates is that these freedom takers ALREADY plan and feel they have in the bag is the banishment of guns - we just haven't been explained that yet.
Psssst! Run back ground check on egg purchases and make it harder for felon to eat a hearty breakfast before starting his day.
Uh, shouldn't criminals be in jail? It's very hard to buy ammo in jail. ACORN is all for criminals voting, but wants everyone treated like criminals for buying ammo, where you'll have to prove your innocence. And anything they don't like in a law they call a "loophole".
Convoluted logic like that tells me this must be his car:

Once again a good post by neverdem.
It would seem ACORN is spreading its leaves, MY (and your) personal hope is that it just leaves.
But the former lawyer turned illigitimate pres (in my op), gives grease to this extremely doltic org.
What to do?
Well, um, since were not talking strictly about guns, you could “reload”. But I have to be honest with you guys and gals out there, I’ve had a lump of lead in my time, and no casualties no matter what happened. I know lead is bad for you, but before I knew that, I admit to playing with it.(I did’nt eat much of it)
And yet I’m 10x smarter than the dolts and libtards in control, God, just imagine if I quit drinkin...
Hmmm, its illegal for felons to hold a firearm. Why would they need ammo?????????/s ENFORCE THE LAW demoDUMMIES!
We have to make it clear we are not talking about gun control, we’re talking about bullets,” said Durham City Council Member Howard Clement III.
WOW These socialists really think that American citizens are STUPID..
The NEW US Constitution. You have the right to bear arms just not the right to have ammunition for those arms.
We must fight these America destroyers everyday because they will never give up inm theor attempts to destroy this Nation.
With the public being law suit crazy, that too may be prohibitive. Plus "they" no doubt will make purchases of powder more difficult to obtain.
I wouldn't stop drinking ... That would drive me crazier than I already am. ;)
> Acorn needs to meet RICO <
Agreed!
The UNC sticker makes it priceless.
self employment as a gun owner vs. a world without peace, gunless and employed by ez go mass messing outrageously gratuitous tyrants
Part of Obama’s “Brown Shirt National Police” Acorn can kiss my ass.
My bullets are my business. So are my guns. So step out of the way.
There are 18 identical pieces of legislation in 18 states pertaining to the ID stamping of ammo, taxes, registration, possession of unstamped ammo, and possession limits.
All sponsored by Democrats of course.
These bills are waiting for the new state legislatures to convene. Check the Gun Owners of America website for state specific info. Let your state legislature know you won’t tolerate left wing lunacy.
Do these idiots realize most criminals ‘steal’ their guns?
What makes them think they wouldn’t ‘steal’ the bullets?
Morons!
And of course, when the bill says “bullet” it really means “loaded round”. Please, don’t tell these naive idiots that the “bullet” is just the part that goes down the barrel. Otherwise they might find out that loaded rounds don’t have to cross the counter at the gun store for them to tax.
Controls on ammunition sales are actually more insidious than controls on guns.
Guns are very durable, and these days very well made. If minimally maintained, they will last your lifetime, your children’s lifetime, and your grandchildren’s lifetime. But without ammunition, they’re not even as useful as a brick.
The gun controllers realize this. That’s why in the coming years you can expect that there will be increased efforts not to ban guns so much, but to limit the sale of ammunition. Probably on environmental grounds. If they’re successful, the available and stored supply of ammunition will dwindle and the objectives of the gun controllers will have been met without ever having implemented a gun ban per se.
The moral of this story: BLOAT.
Sure, none of the thugs on Alston Avenue will ever get their hands on bullets again. Just like the mandatory firearms registration in Durham County keeps guns out of the hood.
Durham County is the perfect setting for ACORN, perfect. I am incredibly thankful that I’ll be getting out of this pit in a few months.
Watched “Hitler's Bodyguards” on the military channel last night...it's uncanny the similarities between then and now, Hitler and Bambi. I wonder if ACORN won't morph into something more insidious.
