Gov. Bill Richardson expects to remain New Mexico's chief executive into February and until then will split his time between the Roundhouse and Washington, D.C., as he awaits a Senate confirmation hearing on his nomination as U.S. commerce secretary.
Richardson held a joint news conference Thursday at the Capitol with Lt. Gov. Diane Denish, who will become New Mexico's 27th governor upon his departure, to disclose preliminary plans for the transition in New Mexico leadership.
Richardson, who has said he won't resign as governor until he is confirmed for President-elect Barack Obama's Cabinet, said he expects to remain governor until mid- to late February.
Both Richardson and Denish assured reporters the transition will be smooth, but said Richardson won't cede authority until he leaves.

She will have to address a budget shortfall that’s grown to more than $500 million in the past three months (when the price of oil was high, they had all sorts of plans to spend the new revenue). BTW, that’s about what Richardson spent building his new railroad which will open a week from Wednesday with free fares for Santa Feans the next three months and you can ride to ABQ after that for the cost of a Big Mac meal — local taxpayers to pick up 90 to 99 percent of the O&M cost of the new railroad. Richardson will be on the first train (for bigwigs and press) on the 15th.

The state senate (run by Dems forever) is reorganizing after the election. They have thrown out a fiscal conservative leader who opposes excessive government regulation and installed a Hispanic lib from northern NM who is just the opposite.
Maybe up to 5,000 per day (2,500 individuals twice a day if you look at it that way). It will be popular with state employees who have to live in ABQ due to expensive housing in SF and with touristas as it will go directly to downtown SF(no parking worries).

Denish today named Kathy Keith as the director of her transition team and Chris Cervini as communications director, the Lt. Governor's Office said in a news release.

Keith, who was director of the state Economic Development Division from 2003 to 2006, will be the point person to the Governor's Office and overall manager of transition activities, the release said.
A native of Tucumcari and a journalism/political science graduate of Texas Tech University, Keith joins the staff from Public Works, LLC, a private firm that assists governors and state cabinet agencies nationwide in planning, innovative policy and efficiency, according to the release.
She was director of the federal program to rebuild Los Alamos following the Cerro Grande Fire from 2000 to 2002 and served as White House liaison for the U.S. Department of Energy from 1998 to 2000 and the U.S. Congress before that, the release said.
Cervini, who will be responsible for working with state agency PIOs and the current Governor's Office communications staff during the transition, has been external communications manager in Lovelace Health System's marketing and public relations department.
Before that he worked from 2003 to 2006 as Denish's chief of staff and communications and policy director, the release said.
Cervini has a master's degree in political science from American University in Washington, D.C.
