In the social circles of the New York Times editorialists, it's OK to have one kid. Two is pushing the envelope. Three or more is tacky, and a threat to the survival of the planet.
That being so, there's really no reason to let any car bigger than a Prius be built. Doing so just encourages the unenlightened to overbreed. And so it is that in its editorial of today, the Grey-but-barren Lady suggests that as a condition of the Detroit bailout, "Congress could consider demanding that Detroit simply phase out S.U.V.s and vans by a certain date."

“”Congress could consider demanding that Detroit simply phase out S.U.V.s and vans by a certain date.””
I am SO SCREWED!!
(signed - an unenlightened breeder)
Could I ask you to check the meds of some of our posters this morning? ;-)
I’m sure you saw all these yesterday, but if you did, it won’t hurt to post them again.

Did you click through and actually read the editorial? Rarely will you find so much cluelessness and stupidity distilled down to such a little nut. Newsbusters is quite right to mock them for it.
The idiots on the New York Times Editorial Board are acting like they can run the auto industry from their suite in New York. They can't even run a newspaper. How are they going to run an auto company?
“They say that since it is very seldom they are all going to the same place at the same time, it was actually cheaper then running one big car all over.”
We did that briefly - and they are right.
But often I was stuck with all the kids on my own while my hubby worked, so I still needed a large vehicle.
We wound up getting a heckuva deal on a Sequoia right when everyone was ditching their SUVs.
Eventually, they'd go up, of course. But for the nonce, new SUV's are a drug on the market and someone wanting to line up reliable, large transportation can do pretty well shopping SUV's, vans, minivans, and station wagons. I'd get one "soonish" and then wait out the Obammunists as they try to screw (yet again) with supply and demand.
Eventually, a new conservative ascendancy (if we don't let all the Spanish-speakers in the Western hemisphere in and give them citizenship, along with Motor Voter "vota Democratica" cards) will fix all the Democratic meddling and maladministration.
“The kids argue less because they are not on top of each other.”
isn’t it great?
What will unenlightened breeders do when the kids all have to squish into a 3 seater bench?
Then we’ll get arrested for lack of seat belts.
I tell ya - these libs just can’t make up their minds.
But for city driving, small cars make the most sense.

What are us oversized folks supposed to do? I am six four and weigh around 275 and I AIN’T FAT! I see some men who make me look relatively small. Are we supposed to walk, stay home or what?
If Finklestein is a nut, I am a nut too. Thanks Mark, you are doing great work for FREEDOM.
What happens is the only chance for the ‘Little 3’ to ever become profitable is likely in producing Suv’s and trucks. If they are not allowed to do so then that market will be filled by other/foreign manufacturers...think Chinese/Toyota etc.
Thanks iopscusa. Nuts of the world, unite!
We need to force liberals to live in small rat box apartments stacked on top of each other in big, smelly cities infested with collectivist morons, welfare bums and criminals.
Oh, wait...
If I could afford an SUV (or any other car payment for that matter, lol), I would have one in a heartbeat. My car seats five including myself and there have been many times that we have had to take two cars to sporting events, etc. due to carting along friends and/or other players. Nothing cheap about that.
Here in the nations capital, you can go to St. Alban’s Prep and watch all the blue-blooded liberal do-gooders (Al Gore went there) drop off their only children. (Episcopagans have one child only.)
Every single last one of them, despite having only one child, and never, ever, ever venturing beyond the belt way, have enormous, black SUVs that must get about 3 MPG.
Derrrrrt! Healy, you’re busted ;^)
And on and on and on is right.
Lately I can't stop thinking about the Chinese and their one child policy, and how it was enforced. And Obama and his promise to immediately sign the Freedom of Choice act. It doesn't take much of a leap to see where this attitude, plus the FOCA, could lead.
...oh, and do not forget how much electricity and natural gas you are allotted. THAT conversation has actually taken place among politicians, environmentalists, and industry leaders.
My father and grandfather built all the bullet-proof windows for the Checker Cab Co. for decades. When I was a little kid I remember my father shooting different bullets at the plexiglass windows propped up on a tree stump to guarantee certain calibers as being safe.
In my desk drawer I still have a couple of rounds that were given to me by my grandfather, .357 caliber with a red nose that tapers to a sharp point. They did a lot of military work and these were given to him to be tested for a certain project. They built the “windows” for the tanks built by GM and Chrysler also, along with periscope prisms.
If your uncle had the sliding thick plexiglass windows gramps probably made them.
NYC effete elites could not ban guns so now they want to ban big cars.
What is it with the buffoons of NYC obsessed with shrinking the reset of the world?
I just hope the new 6% jobless rate helps move more jobs OUT of NYC.
That will be taken care of by a few generations of mandated vegan diets. Then we can all be skinny, tiny people like the Davidians of Southern India, who barely top 5 feet, and have an average lifespan of 45 years. It's for the planet !< /sarcasm >
