Homeland Security Nominee No Border Hawk, Critics Say
CNS News ^ | Dec. 1, '08 | Fred Lucas

Far from being a border hawk, Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano frequestly blocked efforts to curb illegal immigration. Napolitano opposes a border fence, supports expanding a controversial technology visa program and favors a "stringent pathway to citizenship." She has also vetoed a bill requiring voter ID, vetoed a bill requiring local law enforcement to enforce immigration law, and later vetoed another proposal to allow local sheriffs to enforce immigration law. She has also vetoed a bill prohibiting Mexican consul ID cards that critics say are prone to fraud, vetoed an English-only bill and vetoed a bill to criminalize illegal immigration. Napolitano's tough rhetoric on enforcing immigration laws was rarely matched by her record, said Arizona state Rep. Russell Pearce who, as chairman of the state House appropriations committee, wrote numerous immigration bills that were vetoed by the governor. "The governor has done everything she can to be an open borders governor. If not for a supermajority in the House and the Senate and 80 percent of the public for it, she would not have signed the employer sanctions bills. She was backed into a corner. Yet people continue to give her credit," Pearce told CNS News. "She has vetoed all sorts of enforcement measures. She was an early supporter of Barack Obama. It was a political decision," said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.

Napolitano's open border and amnesty positions were the subject of discussion on the Tuesday evening Lou Dobbs' program. Obama is on a fast track to stop, and possibly reverse, the border fence and to sponsor an amnesty bill. His attitude is reflected in his choice of CECELIA MUNEZ to be his Director of Intergovernmental Affairs which will serve as the chief Obama administration liason with state and local governments. Munez is a high ranking LA RAZA executive and a lobbiest for that organization. Having Napolitan in charge of Homeland Security is like having the proverbial fox guard the chicken coop.

Ugh, bad. Chertoff was rather incompetent, but he wasn’t openly pro-open-borders.

If this is the case, the Dems have assured a shooting war along the border. And no law enforcement will be involved.

Sad state of affairs in America. They will be finding the bodies of dead illegals in the washes and arroyos.

Obama is a rank inhumane idiot, and hasn't got the faintest about what is about to happen.

On the bright side, with a collapsing economy maybe Americans will start doing the jobs Americans would not do over the last 10-20 years.

Did Napolitano take all these actions in her second term? If she was this bad in her first term then the people of AZ are to blame. I guess they like lax border security since she was reelected in ‘06 by a large margin.

This is exactly what I thought. Homeland "Security" has become about giving money to contractors and expanding the powers of the government. If they really cared about security why is there effectively no border with Mexico?

I wasn’t aware of Napolitano being Anita Hills lawyer.
Once I found out that fact. she’ll never have my respect.

She’s a POS in my eyes.

Her selection drew high praise Monday from key Democratic lawmakers and Republicans such as the current homeland security chief, Michael Chertoff , and her home-state senator, John McCain . They said that as a border governor, former U.S. attorney and state attorney general, she has the right mix of managerial skills, law-enforcement experience and understanding of the heated immigration issue to handle the challenges ahead.

Yeah, with endorsements like those I am now a believer. /s /s /s /s /s /s (heavy sarcasm)

Judicial Watch, a conservative public interest group, called Napolitano out for her support of expanding the H1-B Work Visa program. The program allows a maximum of 65,000 professionals in “special occupations” valuable to the U.S. economy to get a visa. Last year, Napolitano asked congressional leaders to expand the number of H1-B visas issued by 20,000. Her request was joined in a letter by the governors of Washington, California, Indiana, Colorado, Massachusetts, Wyoming, New York, Wisconsin, Kansas, Minnesota, Nevada and Texas.

That's nice. With jobs disappearing this is a real slap in the face to the average American but it's no surprise.

This woman is about the individual this country can have for Homeland “Security”.
This woman is 100% for Homeland INSECURITY.
There is only one response to this. Firmly suppress Juan McCain, and his open borders crazies, and campaign strongly for strong borders and strong immigration enforcement come 2010. That should be a sure vote winner amongst normal Americans.

She has also vetoed a bill requiring voter ID

I am firmly convinced that anyone who is against voter ID WANTS fraud in our elections. And, the only reason I can imagine they want that is because they know they cannot win otherwise.

The state is approximately 45/55 Democrat/Republican. She was reelected because she is good too businesses! Republican business owners liked her tax breaks and that trumped any problem with illegal aliens!
