Vatican attacked for opposing gay decriminalisation

VATICAN CITY, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Gay rights groups and newspaper editorials on Tuesday condemned the Vatican for its decision to oppose a proposed U.N. resolution calling on governments worldwide to de-criminalise homosexuality.

The row erupted after the Vatican's permanent observer to the United Nations told a French Catholic news agency the Holy See would oppose the resolution, which France is due to propose later this month on behalf of the 27-member European Union.

Archbishop Celestino Migliore said the Vatican opposed the resolution because it would "add new categories of those protected from discrimination" and could lead to reverse discrimination against traditional heterosexual marriage.

"If adopted, they would create new and implacable discriminations," Migliore said. "For example, states which do not recognise same-sex unions as 'matrimony' will be pilloried and made an object of pressure," Migliore said.

A strongly worded editorial in Italy's mainstream La Stampa newspaper said the Vatican's reasoning was "grotesque".

Pointing out that homosexuality was still punishable by death in some Islamic countries, the editorial said what the Vatican really feared was a "chain reaction in favour of legally recognised homosexual unions in countries, like Italy, where there is currently no legislation".

Franco Grillini, founder and honorary president of Arcigay, Italy's leading gay rights group, said the Vatican's reasoning smacked of "total idiocy and madness".

"The French resolution, which is supported by all 27 members of the European Union, has nothing to do with gay marriage. It is about stopping jail and the death penalty for homosexuals," Grillini told Reuters.

The resolution is to be presented by Rama Yade, France's state secretary for human rights.

They will attack the Catholics, Mormons, Lutherans, Baptists and anyone else they don’t like. They actually don’t care what anyone thinks. You will never convince them that they are wrong......they don’t care.

Bingo. The Vatican is on to their game. Finally.

Standing up for traditional values is enough to get one attacked by the gaystapo.

This is KEY:

“....and could lead to reverse discrimination against traditional heterosexual marriage.”

....not to mention discrimination against Christians.

Interesting that the fag lobby is pretty tough on everybody but the mussies. Gee, I wonder why they weren’t out demonstrating against the mosques after the Prop 8 vote in CA?

When I hear crap like this I wonder which side I would be on if the islamofascist started hitting the homos....sorta like choosing between hitler and stalin.

I know, I know, very unchristian of me.

Sodomy is not a civil right...but it shouldn’t be a crime either.

Dibs on the cute horse.

It’s great the Vatican is holding and expanding its defense, but in the long run they are probably on the losing side history on this one. The world is going to hell, and the Vatican is at least holding the crowd back from storming the gate.

Personally, I don’t care if someone sleeps with their dog, just keep it out of my face.

It’s between them and Our Lord.

BUT, the Vatican has taken the correct stand, being the Vatican and all.

So the Vatican is officially in favor of prison time or even execution for homosexuality?

Execution? That's an Islamic precept. The Catholic Church's Catechism strongly cautions against the use of the death penalty in any circumstances, save the most dire, even for crimes of brutality. If you pay attention to these boards you'll see that the Vatican frequently intervenes and pleads for mercy when the US executes criminals, especially murderers. So no, the Vatican does not want to "off" anyone, least of all homosexuals.

As for prison time, the Vatican is almost certainly against that also. The motion is to decriminalize homosexuality which is not synonymous with "prison time". The civil law is or should be based on the moral law and before insanity became contagious, it was recognized that the law operates at several levels. One is preventative and restrictive. Another is educational and instructive. The Vatican wants to preserve this connection which is an acknowledgment that homosexual acts are immoral. Remove this connection and you have removed an important obstacle to accomplishing the next item on the agenda; gay marriage. How does one go about arguing against the secular, legal recognition of gay "unions" when the law recognizes nothing illegal/immoral about the act of sodomy?

You can't and that's the real kicker here. The Vatican is awake to the real agenda, the protests of the homosexual activists and their fellow travelers notwithstanding.

The Church has finally caught on to the significance of all these "decriminalization" movements. It's about normalizing filthy, dangerous behavior. And not many institutions know the kind of harm ramapant homosexuality can do better than the Catholic Church.

Praise God our bishops are coming around!

They didn't say that, did they? I personally am in favor of some kind of penalty for homosexual behavior in public. Not hand holding or kissing, mind you, but the stuff that goes on in public parks and restrooms which is almost exclusively homosexual.

Are you against that?

I disagree. Society has a right to draw lines on deviant sexual behavior. The only question is where. Besides, having those laws on the books at least kept them in the closet and out of our faces.
