Harvard University will bestow an honorary degree today on Senator Edward M. Kennedy at a special convocation.
The ceremony will feature Harvard President Drew Faust and Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer as speakers, and musical performances by cellist Yo-Yo Ma and Harvard students. Kennedy will join an elite group who has received honorary degrees at special Harvard convocations, including George Washington, Andrew Jackson, James Monroe, Winston Churchill, and Nelson Mandela. In today's Globe, columnist James Carroll described, "why this honor is fitting, and why he belongs in such historic company."
Kennedy had been scheduled to receive the degree at Harvard's commencement last spring but could not attend because he was recuperating from brain surgery. Kennedy, who graduated from Harvard in 1956, was "enormously grateful" for the honor.
At the graduation ceremony, Faust described Kennedy as an "extraordinary person" who is "admired by colleagues on both sides of the aisle as one of the nation's most able, energetic, and influential lawmakers."
"He has without doubt been one of our most tireless advocates for education - and higher education in particular - passionately committed to opportunity for all, and to the excellence of America's universities," Faust said.
The senator has maintained close ties to his alma mater, helping to create Harvard's Institute of Politics -- which honors his brother, President John F. Kennedy -- and serving on its board for decades.

A BS in Underwater Basket Weaving.
George Washington crossed the Delaware when it mattered most to this country. Kennedy couldn’t even cross a small bridge when it marttered most to Mary Jo
Guess that is what being caught cheating on a Spanish exam will get you at Harvard.
No surprise that HAHvahd would do this — it only shames a famous university with the further disgrace of continuing to suck up to Ted Kennedy and his ilk. But c’mon, to put this vicious, dishonest, shameless jackal in the company of George Washington and Winston Churchill??? Teddy K. is not worthy to shine their shoes.
Is one allowed to claim a school as his alma mater if they were expelled from it?
This may create a stigma Harvard may never be able to recover from.
Kennedy doesn’t have enough BS already?
Not many humanoids with Mister Kennedy's vile past could accept such an award, however it seems that Edward is wholly unburdened by that conscience thing.

Harvard’s new logo is simply
“without morals”
