Relations between India and Pakistan were on a knife edge last night amid fears that Delhi’s response to the Mumbai attacks could undermine the Pakistani army’s campaign against Islamic militants on the frontier with Afghanistan. Officials and analysts in the region believe that last week’s atrocities were designed to provoke a crisis, or even a war, between the nuclear-armed neighbours, diverting Islamabad’s attention from extremism in tribal areas bordering Afghanistan and thus relieving pressure on al-Qaeda, Taleban and other militants based there. One analyst even described the attacks as a “pre-emptive strike” against Barack Obama’s strategy to put Pakistan and Afghanistan at the centre of US foreign policy. The United States and its allies now face a balancing act in supporting India’s efforts to investigate the Mumbai attacks, without jeopardizing Pakistan’s crucial support for the Nato campaign in Afghanistan.

Only one problem with that theory, training for the terrorist began over 1 year ago. Granted they could have been assuming that McCain would have pursued the same strategy that Obama was, but it was not a preemptive against Obamas plans. Besides, GWB still has about 7 weeks left.

There are stories saying India wasn't snubbed, but the idea of Obama snubbing India is already out there.

The article is kind of an O fluff piece. The strategy is to take out India by destablizing it which makes it harder for Al Qaeda to be pursued by anyone. They would have done it with or without Obama. The cultural divide based on religion alone in that region is huge and they have been fighting for centuries, not decades or a hundred or two hundred years but for centuries.

First I doubt there were just ten terrorists. Second as I indicated, amphibious training for the assault they took part in required time that doesn’t jive with what this article is trying to claim. The training must have taken weeks which doesn’t include the training specific to Mumbai itself. Locations, maps, money, communication set-up, dry runs, escape routes, alternate targets, etc.
