He is also half white.
Unless the one-drop rule still applies, our president-elect is not black.
We call him that -- he calls himself that -- because we use dated language and logic. After more than 300 years and much difficult history, we hew to the old racist rule: Part-black is all black. Fifty percent equals a hundred. There's no in-between.
That was my reaction when I read these words on the front page of this newspaper the day after the election: "Obama Makes History: U.S. Decisively Elects First Black President."

Gay marraige and abortion are perfect examples of states rights over federal laws.
What ports did the slave ships use?
The biggest and nearest. Time was of the essence in slave trading. Money was the second most important factor.
Who made money when a slave was sold to a Southerner?
The auctioneer, the ship owner and/or ship’s captain.
It’s not and never was OK (at least with the slave), but it existed, and still exists today, all over the world, and right under our noses.
I’m not arguing your point. I’m arguing the slant the media gives on one they like versus one they don’t.
I seem to recall a big stink being made a couple of years ago about a new U.S. citizen from S.A. who checked African American on a job application.
Nobody was calling themselves African-American until the MSM broadcast ROOTS.
If his politics were conservative his blackness would not count, any more than Justice Clarence Thomas (who we all know, is not authentically black).
The north got filthy rich off the importation of slaves, even after importation was outlawed. So don't go there.
I think the only person (aside from your friend which I think that is sooooo funny) who actually has a right to be called “African-American” is Oboobie! As much as I can’t stand the Marxist snot-rag or his fugly wife, his mom was American - (didn’t act like it - but was American), and his father - or whom we believe to be his father is from Africa (yes the continent, I know) so I guess we can call him, African-American.
I refuse to call the blacks in the US “African-Americans” because if you were here for generations, how could you still be African, and I also hate the term “blacks”. But if we ARE going to play those games I officially denounce my caucasionship and want a new “name”. I am not white because I am not an albino. I am PEACH, darnit, PEACH I tell you. I want a box that I can mark that says PEACH!!!
And if we really want to go “there”, I also want to be called English-Croation-Welsh-Irish-Maltese-Scotish-Italian-French-American! And just because the US Government really ticked me off with a “mandatory Census Paperwork under penalty of law” 30 plus page of nonsense to fill out last month - thats what I put myself down as on it!!! Hope they had fun figuring that one out!
There are plenty of biracial Freepers who would shake their heads at your analogy. I won’t tell you what to post, but did you ever think that an attitude like yours is what’s fronted by liberals as the attitude of the Republican Party?
I think a case could be made that America has NOT elected a “Black” President, and never will, since it is clear Obama is NOT black, and only calls himself Black because he can’t resist playing the race card in those political poker sessions where one can go “no limit” on the rhetoric.
Listen to the endless string of cliches insisting we’ve turned an important corner historically by electing this “black man” President, and you hear a lot of whistling in the dark, a lot of the “methinks they protest too much” syndrome.
It could be said that the conceit he himself holds, and all his supporters feel about him, only betrays their profound hypocrisy. What happens when a REAL black aspires to high political office? He is subject to a high-tech lynching, like Clarence Thomas. Thomas is a true black, and looks black, Obama is some mulatto/Asian/African/Arab abstraction who served perfectly to mirror our cultural confusion in the early 21st Century. Everyone will find out soon enough that he is nothing but an entirely conventional leftwing politician with nothing new to offer, nothing new at all.
And yeah, his actual personal lineage is 50% white, as you said, making Obama someone “who passed for black”, to turn around the old 50s movie title.
I have taken to telling people I am Celtic-Gaelic-American. I am not so aligned with my Irish, German, Scottish or English history. I like to study them but other than St. Pat day, don’t care.
Today everybody is trying to be anything but white. People claim a minority heritage rather than just plain ol’ vanilla white. (Myself included, I am half American Indian and claim that on all my important papers).
We should be calling ourselves the human race, from America! Then let our reputation, our successes or failures speak for themselves.
A great post, Star Traveler.
I would only add that the original “United States”
was in fact dissolved by the secession of the southern states.
Lincoln’s War effectively created, by force of arms,
a new “United States” that was wholly unlike the original.
All the talk about Lincoln “preserving the union” was and is hogwash.
After the events set in motion by the secession of South Carolina it was too late,
at that point, trying to preserve the union was like trying to unhatch an egg.
The union crafted by the “Founding Fathers” was dissolved in 1860.
Those who left that union were then forced to join Lincoln’s new union.

Who does the ‘authentification’ process, cause I haz a complaint!
“Obviously your from the South so no use arguing about with a person that was for slavery. Over and out.”
That is a false, baiting accusation. Just like we get from the left.
Yeah, but they were Irish, Italians, and Jews.
