(edit)
Police are handing out the footwear to help drunken ladettes get home uninjured after spotting a number of women staggering home in unsuitable shoes.
(edit)
'Sometimes people get drunk and you see them carrying footwear which is inappropriate,' he said.
'The emphasis is on providing replacement footwear for people to get home in, should they find their high heels uncomfortable, inappropriate or soiled.'
The footwear will be paid for by £30,000 worth of funding secured from the Home Office by Safer Communities Torbay.
Police chief, Supt Chris Singer said: 'Linking in with our pastors this funding represents a significant opportunity to make a real difference in relation to alcohol-related harm and disorder'.
(edit)
Danielle Bolton, 19, from Torquay, said'I think it's a great idea and I would wear them 100 per cent. My heels hurt me at the end of the night, so I tend to take them off.
Fellow clubber Leanne Thomas, 21, said: 'I go out clubbing at the harbourside most weekends and I usually walk home bare footed because my heels hurt. I think it's a great idea'.

Mediocre (formerly Great) Britain - The Ever-Expanding, Ultimate NANNY/POLICE State.
In the future, they'll probably be requiring their citizens to get something akin to a "hall pass" to ALLOW them to venture out from the padded cells which have become their government-mandated "homes".

Oh, that was good. :)
Reminds me of certain family members. Thankfully, they are on the other side of the country.

These are just the drinker posers.
Women who are serious about their drinking
get dressed with the appropriate footwear
before they leave the house.

Their government would be remiss not to give them flipflops to help them cover their bare feet—just like ours would be remiss not to give grade school boys condoms to cover their bare—

Are they planning to have a stashe of flip-flops behind the bar so the bartenders can hand them out at closing time? What if someone doesn’t get a flip-flop and falls down on the way home? Does she get to sue? And what about the women who are not drunk? And the men....It’s only fair to apply the policy to everyone, so they should get flip-flops too.
It might not be so bad - I have some shoes that are uncomfortable....I’d like some boots, please. (It’s cold up here in Michigan.)
This can’t be a real policy - Is this a joke?

I'm glad to hear it. With all the reports out of the U.K. it sometimes sounds like the muzzies run the place.
Good to know there are still bastions of sanity there!

Are they planning to have a stashe of flip-flops behind the bar so the bartenders can hand them out at closing time?Apparently not, at least at this point. From the article:
The flip slops will be available from a safe bus which has operated in the resort town for several years, offering help and sanctuary to youngsters in trouble.
What if someone doesnt get a flip-flop and falls down on the way home? Does she get to sue?
If this were in the USA, most likely. I don't believe that the UK is 'quite' so lawsuit-crazy quite yet.
And what about the women who are not drunk?
Apparently they will be required to continue wearing their uncomfortable shoes until they become drunk and pose a hazard to themselves, at which point they will become eligible for the taxpayer-provided shoes. At least that's my understanding based upon my interpretation of the article.
And the men....Its only fair to apply the policy to everyone, so they should get flip-flops too.
Given that men's shoes are usually more comfortable than women's, I'm guessing that only severely drunken transvestite 'males' will be eligible for the free shoes. A sexually-sane but drunken male who demands free flip-flops on the basis of his interpretation of 'fairness' will likely be informed that there are not enough for everyone and his taking a pair of flip-flops will deprive a more needy transvestite of the shoes. Depriving a transvestite of 'appropriate footwear' is most likely regarded as a Hate Crime.
It might not be so bad - I have some shoes that are uncomfortable....Id like some boots, please. (Its cold up here in Michigan.)
Under the 0bama Administration (bite my tongue) this may prove to be a reality.
This cant be a real policy - Is this a joke?
It is indeed real....forty-six thousand dollars' worth of flip-flops real (and that's just the start)

I’m curious.
Is there really that much more binge-drinking in the UK vs. USA?

In another life, many years ago, these flip-flops would have been a signal to young men that those wearing them were, perhaps, a bit “easier” than the others.

I found that to be the case, Sherman. Public drunkenness was a real problem I witnessed. It wasn’t reserved for just the weekends or evenings either. I lived in a lovely market town. The pubs in the town center were granted permission to play loud music to attract the younger people. It soon got way out of hand. I avoided going through the square....even on a Wednesday afternoon.
I would have to take an early bus into work and unlock the shop where I worked. Vomit would be all over the sidewalks and near the rubbish bins. Nice way to be greeted on a morning.

I think you are confusing “shower shoes” with “come f me shoes”. The picture clearly is of shower shoes.

Officers will carry bags of the blue, unisex flip-flops on their rounds and will hand them to anyone who looks a little unsteady on their feet.
The rubber shoes, which carry printed messages about safe drinking and alcohol limits, will also be available free-of-charge from the council’s ‘Safe Bus’ on the harbourside.

Thanks. That happens here too.
But it’s pretty limited by locale.
You do need to watch where you walk on Bourbon Street.
