Mpls. Somali community reacts to terrorist reports (Update)

The Somali community in the Metro has become fearful after reports that one of their own was a suicidal bomber.

Federal sources say Shirwa Ahmed blew himself up in a suicide bombing in northern Somali last month. They also believe he was a recruiter in the Twin Cities for a terrorist network.

Government sources believe that as many as 40 young men who knew Ahmed, recently left Minnesota without telling their families.

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS talked to Ahmed's family. They said they have not heard from him in weeks.

The report was the talk of this busy Somali market on Wednesday.

In south Minneapolis, many in the Somali community have been fearful to go on camera to talk about the reports. Off camera, people told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS they were concerned about how the community as a whole will be perceived after the incident.

"The bottom line is there are people who are recruiting here, kids who are being brainwashed to go back there and blow themselves up," explained Omar Jamal with the Somali Justice Advocacy Center.

Sources believe there is a strong network of recruiters working the Twin Cities, trying to convince young Somalis to surrender themselves for the cause of terrorism.

CIA Director Michael Hayden acknowledges a growing tie between Al Qaeda and Somali terrorist groups. Federal investigators believe these missing men are training for terrorist attacks overseas, but can't be sure they won't return the Twin Cities someday to carry out an attack.

What really frosts me about this is the fact that they are worried about how their community is perceived and not that there are vile people recruiting their children to be suicide bombers. If some SOB was trolling my neighborhood for “recruits” I would be turning over every rock and contact to find out who they were and get rid of them, legally or illegally.

This isn't about community activism, this is the life or death of their children. Or do the “community” hold to the opinion that the dead suicide bomber goes to paradise. Maybe that makes it more palatable for them.

And thousands of Somali refugees who settle in one of the coldest places in the United States really can't be all that bright, either. For someone who has lived most of his life in Africa, blowing himself up might be an attractive alternative to spending a long winter in Minnesota.

The article says that the guy blew himself up in northern Somalia. I'm going to guess that this was probably in Somaliland, a breakaway province (ie British Somaliland before they were forced to merge with Italian Somalia in 1961) that is one of the few stable places in the Horn of Africa and an active participant in fighting terrorism.

Despite everything that Somaliland has done to support the US and the War on Terror, we refuse to recognize their independence, so their military is having to rely on ancient Western or cheap Russian/Chinese equipment.

A Somali returnee was in front of my wife in the line at DEN a week ago. She had huge bags and her male escorts just abandoned her halfway to the front desk, very strange. She had lots of bling.
