Almost half of married Egyptian women have been physically abused by their husbands, a study by the government statistics centre said on Wednesday.

The study by CAPMAS said that 47 percent of women between the ages of 15 and 49 reported being victims of domestic violence and seven percent said a spouse raped them, state news agency MENA reported.

Domestic violence is punishable under Egyptian law, but police are reluctant to intervene in something that is considered a private matter, said an Egyptian women's rights activist.

My concern isn’t the 47% of the husbands that beat their wives. It’s for the 53% of husbands who don’t beat their wives, but have sex with their camels and goats.

I believe that Islam is a horrible religion straight from the fires of hell, but the article does not define what constitutes abuse. Is sexual abuse demanding intercourse when she claims to have a headache, is abuse making her sleep on the couch when she burns the goat roast, is abuse just shouting at her when she wants to talk about the relationship during the camel race? I have heard women claim verbal abuse because her man said "why yes, that dress does make you look fat." The term abuse often provokes horrific images, but too often it is used as an excuse and cover for a unsatisfied wife. BTW - men who truly physically harm women or children are scum!
