As excited as Europeans were to see Democratic senator Barak Obama elected president in the U.S., there turned out to be an unexpected cloud around that silver lining. Namely, it's that blacks, and minorities in general, have made far less social progress in Europe than in the United States. Obamas election is just another, and rather striking, example of this. This also goes a long way towards explaining why there have been no terror attacks in the U.S. since 2001. And why the 2001 terrorists were warned to stay away from American Moslems.
Obama's election is not an exception, but part of a long trend. An Indian-American was recently elected governor of Louisiana, and in 1996, a Chinese-American was elected governor of Washington state. As much as other nations preach equality and opportunity, it's the United States where it actually happens...

Exactly. Historically, in Europe the most admired people were the landed aristocrats. They were largely admired precisely because they didn’t DO anything. Those who made a pile of money in business would often retire, buy land and pretent they were themselves aristocrats, rather than continuing in business and creating wealth for society.
This is, BTW, historically an anomaly. Originally, aristocrats had definite and critically important functions. They were the local government and military leaders, protecting the people against attack, mostly from other aristocrats, BTW. In return they received wealth and status. The nation-state gradually took over their functions, including their political power, but the aristocrats somehow retained their wealth and status after they were no longer providing any real function to society.
Agatha Christie, P.G. Wodehouse and other writers describe the lifestyle of alternating between the country house and the city flat, with life in both consisting largly of parties.
I don’t think we’ve ever had anything similar in America. Even those who are rich by inheritance are expected to DO something. By far the most common small talk ice-breaker here is, “What do you do?” The implication being that everybody is expected to do something. Even trophy wives are expected to get involved in charity work or something.
Unfortunately, a great deal of what those with inherited wealth choose to do with their lives is destructive to our society, largely because their guilt over their good fortune leads them into causes that attack the system that originally produced their wealth.
I wouldn’t mind being “nouveau riche”............or even “paleo riche”.............
America was founded as a multicultural society.
Comapring the United States with ethnic nations like Sweden, Japan, France, India, etc is madness. All of the latter have a right and a responsibility to maintain their national ethnic identity.
Western European states no more have a responsibility to absorb the hords of foreign invaders than would Japan or India.
Ethnically they should not be required to model themselves after the U.S. nor should they strive to.
even the vaunted one-world commie Noam Chomsky recently gave a speech in which he maintained that Europe is “far more racist” than present day America.
I have to admit I’m often shocked to see an English black man on TV who not only looks purely good and doesn’t have that “swagger&sneer” hunkered-down look
When my husband and I were in London, it was amazing to me, a black woman, to see and hear the black Brits. I hate to agree with you, but there seems to be a difference between we American blacks and the Euro-blacks. I think we have a problem with overcompensation and sometimes an arrogant exterior that comes from hiding low of self esteem.

America is, I believe, the only majority white nation to ever elect a black (or minority) as head of state. It’s nothing to be proud of when you consider who that black man happens to be.
Don't kid yourself. America is right behind them. Been to Dearborn, MI lately?? Watch the tenticles crawl out from there over the next 10 years. I believe Saudi Arabia has an in-depth, well-thought-out, well-executed, well-funded, covert long term plan to take over America. (but of course, they are our "friend & ally!") The number of Mosques being built here nationwide is ASTOUNDING...while Christianity withers. Mostly funded by the Saudis.
Bottom line: on this front, the future looks bleak for us, as well as the EU.
This is all semantics. If you consider the Saami, the Basque, the Britons, the etc, then the EU has plenty of minorities in their society’s positions of power.
You’d be surprised at how many middle class and upperclass Mexicans and Central and South Americans reside in Spain.
But we aren’t surprised at how many Old World middle class and upper class immigrants the US receives.
When the US is swamped with New World unskilled labor immigration, Western Europe is swamped with unskilled Old World unskilled labor immigration.
The parallels are obvious, and as is often stated, I’ll take the unskilled mostly nominally Christian New World unskilled immigration over the situation unfolding in Europe.

The historical significance of electing an African-American is greatly overshadowed by the fact that Obama is a completely unqualified socialist. My opinion of him would be no different if he was John Smith, white Protestant from Virginia.
The people causing the problems are mostly 2nd and 3rd generation immigrants- they are French citizens who cannot be deported anywhere.
We Americans actually DO what they preach and prattle about. That’s the difference between us and them.
I would suggest that we have (or used to have) a multi-ETHNIC society with an American culture. This drift to worshipping diversity - and glorifying it - is suicidal.
And I hope strategy page is right about U.S. muslims being less influenced by the foreign nutcases. The few I've worked with have been pretty good people. However, after reading about Hamtrack and Dearborn MI, I am a little edgy.
