Forget the Republican filibuster and the race to 60. The real fight in the next Congress is Democrats vs. themselves.
With nearly complete control of Washington for the first time in three decades, Democrats are entering a treacherous power zone in which many of their priorities could easily be undone by the geographic, demographic and ideological factions that compete for supremacy within the party.
Unless Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) can whip their caucuses into unity, numerous fault lines will be revealed: Southern Democrats vs. Northern liberals on labor law; California greens vs. Rust Belt Democrats on global warming; socialized medicine adherents vs. go-slow health care reformers; anti-war liberals vs. cautious centrists on national security. And dont forget the anti-bailout crowd vs. the powerful Michigan Democrats in both chambers when it comes to money for Detroit.
Republicans insist they will fight for their issues when they can, but they also might simply take a front-row seat to see if Democrats implode.

See post 18.
We just came full circle.
Happy Thanksgiving to you.
You must drive your spouse nuts. Quit nitpicking!
We was used in the context of SOME conservatives
Enough.
When the Republicans are losing membership, old membership, to the tune of 30%, and an upstart party like the Reagan Conservative AIP becomes the third largest party in America over a summer season, with little more than internet and word of mouth, one had best read the writing on the wall.
Mene, mene, tekel, upharsin.
What I said was my opinion. "Some" is not part of my opinion.
What you say is yours.
You have made your point, ad nauseum. My point, is, as a conservative, the GOP is not your home. It is wishful thinking to think it is.
"Some", as yourself, see it differently.
That is your opinion.
Oh, now one poster can declare "enough" as though his opinion is the final word?
Laughable. Very laughable.
I remember when the reform party was the 3rd largest party. Or was it the green party? Where are they now?
When Haley Barbour, Bobby Jindal, Sarah Palin, etc. (all good conservatives) speak of leaving the GOP, I'll consider the possibility that another party might get somewhere when election time comes around.
For now, many good conservatives remain in the GOP.
Ah, speaking for others again, eh?
The point is not valid
They way he said it is appropriate in the context it was used, and to say it any other way would have sounded silly.
And its way of the topic of this thread.
It's no different than saying we (as in America) elected Obama president. Would you come back and say: some of us didn't elect Obama.
You really must have better thing to do with your time. I do, so I will not waste any more time on this thread.
Maybe you should flounder around with the Libertarian Party or some other turd party. Personally, I will stay and work to take the Republican party back. You may not have noticed but we unloaded some moderate debris this past election, and added some top-notch, genuine conservative new blood.
For serious conservatives, there is no choice but to try to take back the GOP. One thing Obama's election proved yet again is that money is indeed the "mother's milk of politics", and the GOP has a money-raising infrastructure that simply dwarfs whatever any turd party, existing or proposed, could ever hope to muster.
McCain got killed in the money war precisely because he was depending on rock-ribbed, grass roots moderates to enthusiastically donate to his campaign. How stupid was that? I suspect the real money didn't start coming in to the McCain campaign until he made the Palin selection.
In any event, turd party talk is naive on the face of it and it's embarrassing on this board.
No offense meant. I am as frustrated as you are, believe me.
FRegards,
LH
Sounds good to me.
No, just going back to post 36 again.
You’re the one rewriting history.
You’re now arguing about me expressing a personal opinion about a group people.
You don’t agree, fine.
Don’t be a jerk about it.
Those who presume to speak for all conservatives are the jerks.
*snort*
For now, many good conservatives remain in the GOP.
Fine. You may keep them.
Oh, now one poster can declare "enough" as though his opinion is the final word? Laughable. Very laughable.
Every bit as laughable as your being "one poster" declaring it laughable.
And BTW, no party has outstripped the Libertarians of third party status to my knowledge, until now. If any did, it was the Constitution Party... And no one did it in sheer registrations in one season, surely.
I, for one, will not be back, and will oppose the Republicans mightily- Unless they return to Reagan, fully and completely. Since there is an alternative House where Reagan is welcome with open arms, that demand is with the force of an ultimatum. There is no longer a need for me to compromise and support a lesser candidate. There will always be a Reaganite to vote for.
No offense taken, LH.
This past election and its results have us all frustrated.
But talk of a third party is not embarassing on this board.
All political options need to be explored.
The two party system works when there are opposing viewpoints. But now, the GOP doesn’t seem to have the will to be different. Rhey are happy to go along and get along. Their present spinning on this campaign and the reasons they lost show they don’t really care about American exceptionalism, just the power they once had.
We had this problem with the GOP before. In 1992, 19% of the folks voted third party. Yes, it gave us Clinton, but more importantly it gave us the 1994 Congress, with Newt and his contract with America. It forced a rethinking of beliefs and priorities.
In spite of the Dole misstep in 1996, they became a msjority in both houses. And then we gave them the Presidency.
The rest,as they say, is history.
The GOP leaders were, and are, embarassed by the latest conservative star, Sarah Palin. And McCain, after Palin worked her heart out for him, could not even be bothered to speak in her defense post election, until the time it did not matter any longer.
This is the fate that awaits conservatives in the future reworking of the GOP. Send money, get out the vote, and shut up-so we don’t scare away the moderates. And don’t bother us with principles. Oh, and learn Spanish.
Well,that’s not a future I want.
Well, it's become obvious who the real jerk is.
I see. So Sarah Palin is not a good conservative in your book.
That is exactly why those of your ilk should not presume to speak for all conservatives.
It's always been obvious to me that the jerks are the self-righteous who claim to speak for all.
I only expressed an opinion.
The only one on this thread who is self righteous is you.
You really shouldn't call yourself names.
No, Sarah Palin is not a Conservative. She is a populist. And she would lose a general election.
