Council passes controversial bill on stolen guns [We don't need no stinking Constitution]
Pittsburt Post Gazette ^

Pittsburgh City Council gave its first approval today to legislation requiring that anyone report a lost or stolen firearm report that within 24 hours or potentially face a $500 fine.

The 6-1 vote, with two abstentions, sets up a final vote likely next week, which would send the legislation to Mayor Luke Ravenstahl for his signature or veto, and then potentially to the courts, where similar measures have been challenged.

"Who really cares about it being unconstitutional?" said Councilwoman Tonya Payne, a supporter.

It is also against STATE law. Philly tried the same thing and their “local” firearm laws were thrown out of court.

Ummm..., the title is “Council passes controversial bill on stolen guns”

I don’t know how you came up with that as a title of the article. It’s not in the source document...

Isn't that lovely....FINE THE VICTIM!

This garbage passed here in CT last year.

When I meet people who think this is good law I ask them, "if I stole your snow shovel in July, would you notice within 24hrs?"

I have yet to receive a reply.

Really, this is a standard mindset among the left -

if they deem something to be “right”, then the idea that the government can’t do it due to Constitutional restrictions is ridiculous to them.

You can make a leftist’s head pop open with this:
“Just because something is a good idea doesn’t mean that the government can or even should do it.”

It seems to me that the Constitution scares the SH!T out of most people, that is why we move further and further away from it. We are a nation of wimps.

The government hates the Constitution because it limits their power. The electorate hates the Constitution because it would mean they would have to be responsible for themselves.

Tonya Payne - Im sure she went through school learning about black pride and the African American struggle...how blacks are put down by d’man and all dat crap - yet one wonders if they even realize the great country and blood that was spilled so that they can even open their trap??

Diversity is killing this country by dumbing down our leaders, our schools, and our industries. Instead of forcing the incompetent to struggle and compete we end up with idiots like this who are appointed soley on the fact that they are black.

The "system" doesn't know when the gun was stolen....so how do they figure out when the 24 hours has passed?

Absolutely stupid...and unenforcible.

Pittsburgh’s City Council has a very high opinion of themselves as a legislative body, yet they really can’t even approach the real problems that the municipality faces from a humongous pension fund crisis to a longstanding epidemic of workmens comp claims.

Instead this body attempts to tackle gun violence, passing an unconstitutional ordinance that could not have prevented a single known crime.

A quarter century ago, at least they provided a bit of comic relief, when they debated a leash law that one councilman wanted to extend to cats on the basis that it would be discriminatory against dogs not to.

“...rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add ‘within the limits of the law,’ because law is often but the tyrant’s will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.”

Thomas Jefferson (note that last sentence)
