***Barney’s “Hippie” edition catalog***

Good grief! Why would anyone want anything “hippie?” It was ugly the first time, thirty-five years ago (I was in college then) and it’s ugly now! I am so sick of “my generation” foisting off re-treads onto the public today. I guess too much drug use has taken the “creative” out of “creativity.”

I’m presuming that “hippie” fashions are to get us back to the era of “peace and love” when the SDS and Weather Underground were bombing buildings and fomenting general anarchy. Now that Bill Ayers’ buddy 0 is headed for the White House, it’s deja vu all over again!

I guess some cannot read sarcasm and need it too be told to them. You are one of them. I have no problems with meeting my Christmas financial obligations to my family. Get a life idiot.

When I was in the Army, I used to umpire softball and baseball and referee basketball and flag and tackle football nearly every day to make extra money. That extra money was saved and we used it for our three kid's Christmas presents. I always bought my wife something, but told her not to spend money on me, to put it on the kids. After duty hours, I would go umpire two or three ball games, or ref two basketball or flag football games that the troop teams played in the various base leagues. That is one thing the Army had was good company level sports programs. Each company had its flag football, basketball or softball teams, thus lots of sports for the troops to play. We did not have a lot of officials to call the games, so we had to work a lot. I usually worked five out of seven days each week. On weekends there were tournaments and high school sports. The bummer was the pay was not real great, so the more I reffed, the more I made for the kids Christmas’ and even school clothes. Then the regular pay could go to food, car, and the other bills of life.

I wear Crocs all the time. They have a winter pair called ‘Mammoth’ with a washable fleece lining. ‘Alice’, Juneau’ and ‘Prima’ crocs can be worn anywhere, anytime.

When you effort at sarcasm falls flat, there is no need to be insulting in polite company.

Then you should have kept your smart rear end remark to yourself if you don’t want someone returning fire.

So, how do you get the colleges to waive the application fee?
My senior is applying to everything in sight and it costs anywhere from $40 to $60 per application.

It was so much easier with my son, he is the academic whiz and knew he would get into whatever college he applied to so he only applied to the three he really wanted to attend. Of course, he got in and now attends a great school.

But, my daughter is more of an abstract thinker, imaginative and creative. Her grades are good but not stellar and her SAT could be better. If we could avoid some of the fees that would be great.

It must make you feel good to see the bond between your daughters. With 5 sisters I was always at odds with a couple but then had a couple more to hang with. Now we are all middle aged and we get along great but live in separate parts of the country.

Thank you she was. In her early fifties she took on seven kids between the ages of one and ten. I love my mom, but Nan-na was the heart of the family. Seven years she’s been gone but I have only the best memories of her and my childhood.

One day your kids will realize how much you love them. It’s true that when as kids we never understand what our parents had to do to take care of us. When my own are acting a little spoiled or ungrateful, I know there will come a day when they get it. Just hope I’m around to enjoy it:)

Maybe reread what I first wrote, and take it as genuine advice for someone who seemed to be struggling.

The same as usual. I wait till the last minute. Not going to be spending a lot this year. I’m doing well but given the situation and our new President I don’t want to spend money I may need later.

The application fees were waived by the schools. I assume it was based on gpa and SAT scores. She’s planning on majoring in Engineering (mechanical engineering at this point). They also waived the essay, teacher recommendations, etc. Basically, she’s being recuited by the various College of Engineering of each school.

It probably has more to do with the College of Engineering as they’re heavily recuiting women.

Most of the app fees were about $75. Most if not all schools waived the app fee.

Yep. She’s like your son. She’ll get into whatever school she applies to...she’ll have the choice. It really all depends on how much scholarship money they offer. Her first choice is Penn State, our alma mater. My husband got a full ride there. We’d love for her to go there but we’re out of state so unless she gets tons of scholarship money, I don’t see how it’s possible. Renssalear (sp) is heavily recruiting her but haven’t offered enough money yet. NYU Poly is also calling all the time. Drexel is too but coming from philly, I don’t want her living in West Philly (University City). She doesn’t want to live in the city either (which pretty much negates NYU Poly).

Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and University of Texas have called. She wasn’t even considering those schools since she was focusing on Penn State and Virginia Tech mostly. When Texas A&M contacted her, she asked me about Texas. Now Texas is far from here, lol. I thought Virginia Tech was far, lol. Now I’m thinking about plane tickets and visits. It’s hard.

Of course we would love her going to Penn State, our alma mater, my husband got a full ride there for Engineering. But, we were both in state. And it was decades ago.

She’s seriously considering Texas Tech and Texas A&M now. She thinks Texas would offer her opportunities she can’t get in this area.

At this point, I want her to go where she wants. Talking about not having debt, etc. We’ll do what we can to help pay but we don’t want her to have a huge loan to pay once she graduates. She’s a smart kid. She’s looking to that now. She knows if she gets a full ride anywhere, she’ll take it. We’re crossing our fingers for Penn State. Texas A&M and Texas Tech are looking really good.

Our 16 yr old junior is like your daughter. She’s awesome in Math and Sciences. She just has no interest in them. Her gpa is great and her psat score is great...she’ll take the SAT in January. But, she doesn’t know what she wants to major in, she just knows she has no interest in math and science despite being in AP and Honors.

She’s imaginative and creative. But she won’t be going into Engineering which where the freebies are (at least the freebies for women in Engineering). Next year will be more difficult, college wise, for us. Hopefully her gpa and SAT scores will help.

Our 7th grader, no interest in school. An A student so far but really no interest in school. She’s all about sports. Hates school. Loves whenever she’s on a field or court. THAT one is going to be tough when it comes to college.

It makes me so happy to see the bond between the girls. The two older ones, they know each other is their best friend. The two younger ones, they’re learning each other is their best friend. All 4, amaze me. When it comes right down to it, they are there for each other. It’s wonderful to watch.

I didn’t have a sister. I had brothers and as much as I love them and they love me, it’s different.

I see what you’re saying with my own girls. The two oldest are best friends as are the two youngest, yet they fight. The oldest and youngest have a bond, maybe because of the difference in age. The two middle fight yet are so close too. They all have a different relationship with each other.

Wow, I know you are proud of your girls. Sisters are great, as I said I have five, each one a unique and distinct personality though we all share certain mannerisms. Separately you would never guess we are sisters, together there’s no doubt.

I know what you mean about the money and debt. Unfortunately, my son has had to take out some loans but not much. One thing I like about it is that he is invested in his success. I remind him that those loans have to be paid off whether or not he graduates. It’s a great motivator. When he was accepted to Pepperdine I told him that that was great but he would need to get X amount of money in scholarships in order to go. We don’t have Pepperdine kind of money. I prayed and told God that he needed X in dollars in order to go there. LO and Behold, that’s is the exact amount he was offered and every year he has won more from private alumni scholarships. We are so blessed with this school and he has thrived there.

My daughter is interested in telecommunications and broadcast journalism. Megan Kelly is her idol and she watches her whenever she is on Fox. I told her that Ms. Kelly is also a lawyer, but she has no interest in that direction. It’s amazing, when I was her age I wanted to be a newspaper journalist. I never finished school and I look back now and think it’s because I never had a real role model in that business, a clear example of what to aspire to. Barbara Walters was one of the only one two women in TV news. Katie Couric was still in the future. What a difference a generation makes.
