[Barf Alert] "Milk" is more than a movie
Denver Post ^ | 11/21/2008 | Lisa Kennedy

Posted on 11/23/2008 1:13:22 AM PST by CE2949BB

On a temperate night in the City by the Bay last month, a community gathered to honor one of its fallen with the world premiere of "Milk." Gus Van Sant's film stars Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, the San Francisco city supervisor who, along with Mayor George Moscone, was shot and killed on Nov. 27, 1978.

In front of the Castro Theatre, the cast and civic VIPs stopped for interviews. There was Josh Brolin, who plays Dan White, the city supervisor who pulled the trigger. There was James Franco, who plays Milk's most significant other. Across the street, people waved "No on Prop. 8" placards toward folks who likely agreed wholeheartedly.

Three weeks later, the ballot measure banning gay marriage would pass and set off a round of angry protests. But this was a night of celebration.

"I'm proud of my city," Mayor Gavin Newsom said from the stage. "It doesn't just tolerate its diversity. It celebrates its diversity."

Next week, the movie about the nation's first openly gay male elected official will open in 18 markets, including Denver. In addition to Penn and Brolin, "Milk" also showcases Diego Luna as boyfriend Jack Lira and Alison Pill as Anne Kronenberg, who managed Milk's winning campaign in 1977. Emile Hirsch plays Cleve Jones, Milk's friend and an early gay- rights activist.

"Milk" is being hailed as a masterpiece. It is. Awards prognosticators forecast Penn's performance will earn the actor another Oscar nod. It will.

I love Thai food, but Costa Rica doesn’t have a Muslim insurgency.

Actually I can’t wait till it shows up on DVD.

If there is some sort of cut out cardboard thing, I’d risk arrest to steal it, and with my trusty camcorder, in the most public place I dare, Burn it in effigy, then post it for all to see. That’s how far my disdain goes for Newsome, I almost puked typing his (her) name.

Eddie go away, yer givin me the heaves.

Concentrated in the Southwest along the boarder with Malaysia, The Thai’s don’t put up with their $#!t and has not effected the balance of the country. Most are coming into Thailand from Malaysia, That place sucks by the way. Costa Rico is nice also. Getting pretty spendy there from what I have heard. Good fishing to be had there also.

This would fall under the Hate Crime's BS unless you were burning a effigy of Sarah Paylin or GWB or the American Flag then it would be peachy keen.

Watching how the Thai’s handle it is at times. Few Muslums around my neck of the woods here. Do get a kick outta the way they treat Gay’s, Khatoy’s and Ladyboy’s here and there is no demanding ?????Equallity????? or demanding ?????recognition????? by them. Don’t think they would push a old lady around either.

“It doesn’t just tolerate its diversity. It celebrates its diversity.”

Liar.

Try saying anything contrary to the majorities position there - like you support prop 8 and see how “diverse” they are...

Thailand, great place, good food, fine woman. Great time had by all of good intent.

I’ll never forget that great place. There were even a few Vets there that retired there.

I’ll never forget how many places hosted me and my friends (Shipmates, which is like brothers).

The appreciation of many folk, I had ever met, in my travels, Knows no bounds, Panang Malyasia, Eddie Yap, former Prize Fighter, with his friend Elden Tan, good folk. I could dig out a girls name in Singapore, but you get the idea, Western Australlia - Not - as - good - as Eastern Aussieland. I tried to look up Rick Kinsell, but alas my Aussie shipmate must have been somewhere else at the time.

The only beatdown were when these folk told me of thier plight. “Forced to be a Muslm (by law)”, “You can’t get 12 records for 1 cent”, Now I realize the average folk had it harder than I, I truly will not forget the Friends I made, I had lotsa fun too, Thailand, Phillipines, South Korea, Hong Kong, I mets lotsa folk, not just the laidies mind you. Case in point, Greece. Awesome, I was alone, in a wedding or wedding party or whatever. I ate for free, I drank for free, I think they gave me real OuZo, for free. I danced with the bride, much to the delight of all onlookers, and to this day, I still know they were’nt laughing at me, They fed me so much liquor, they were sayin, something like “Oh my god He’s still standing” I’m sure of it. Spain, KICKA$$, Sicily, trapped a bit, but still very cool.

I feel so so sorry for the average libtard that up until now had to apolgise for being an American, If they were smart they would have partied with me.

I was hanging out at what we call the Acey Ducey lounge at the enlisted club in Pearl Harbor(open to all hands now, Formerly E5-E6) with the first Japaneese Sailors To be there since WW2. Those young guys were so nice and respectfull. (concidering), My ship at times hosted other ships from forigen navies. I had a damn blast through my career. um.. Mexico and Jamaica.. not so much. Egypy, UAE, I did have some fun.

While this will win lots of awards, it won’t make much money. There just aren’t that many people will want to see it. FTM, biopics as a genre seldom make much money.

Probably the government will provide a bailout for the studio. Or perhaps a grant for their production of such critically important art.

Yeah...I was living in the Bay Area at the time, and Dan White resigned after being hassled by the gay mafia in the supe’s dept. He regretted the resignation and asked Milk for his job back...to ignore or rescind White’s resignation letter.

Milk (who was as nasty a human being as existed in SF) said no, even though he could have done so.

That ticked off White, who was a former cop, and he killed Milk, not because he was a homosexual, but because he refused to give back White’s foolish resignation letter.

I loved ‘Frisco. I loved the Presidio, GG Park, the aquarium, the restaurants, the piers, Chinatown, Henry Cowell Redwoods, Highway 17 over the mountains, Felton and Boulder Creek, the Marin headlands.

I loved reading Charlie McCabe, Herb Caen and Stan Delaplane every day in the SF Chron. I loved everything about the Bay Area except for the freakish, sick, perverted, demonic people who lived there, both in the Castro and in the Pacific Heights, starting from Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Allen Ginsberg in the ‘50’s to the Mitchell Brothers in the ‘70’s, it was a literal cesspool of the dregs of humanity, from billionaires to paupers.

I eventually moved away and have only been back a few times.

Ed
