Sunday, November 16, CBS News's 60 Minutes broadcast the first interview with President-elect Barack Obama. The exchange touched on a wide range of topics, from Obama's distaste for college football's computerized selection of a national champion to his plans for changing course in economic and foreign policy. At one point, Obama was asked about the terrorist detention facility at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. He responded:
I have said repeatedly that I intend to close Guantánamo, and I will follow through on that. I've said repeatedly that America doesn't torture and I'm going to make sure that we don't torture. Those are part and parcel of an effort to regain America's moral stature in the world.
The president-elect's comments were not surprising. He had often promised on the campaign trail to close Guantánamo. And in the days before the 60 Minutes broadcast, anonymous officials from his transition team had let the press know that the president-elect would deliver on his pledge. They cannot yet say what the Obama administration will do with the 250 or so detainees still being held, but according to the Washington Post, the new team will review the government's files on each detainee and make a determination case by case.
Whatever happens to the detainees, the important point for much of the commentariat is that Guantánamo will be shuttered. For Guantánamo's many critics, the facility long ago became a symbol of all that is wrong with the Bush administration's conduct of the war on terror-from its cowboy-like unilateralism to its alleged widespread torture and abuse of terrorist suspects. That many dangerous enemies lurk in Guantánamo's cells has often been a secondary concern, if a concern at all.

Then why is Obama torturing the American electorate?
If Guantanamo Detainees are released in Amereica, its an excellent opportunity to take care of them once and for all. Send them to Texas or Wyoming.
I will go along that but one condition. The prisoners are moved in with Barak and his family.
I’m sure they’ll be much better off in Federal “Pound you in the A$$” prison.
He’s just shuckin’. Obama LIKES torture or he wouldn’t run around threatening to destroy the jobs and income of so many millions of Americans with ruinous taxes and denial of electric power.
This would be worth a lot of popcorn, but it isn’t funny.
Just let a bunch of Navy Seals take them home on a neutral vessel. They really don’t want to got out and hunt them down again.
Obama will have to find someplace else to stash them ~ but not here ~ maybe Chicago, maybe St. Louis or something.
A quick death is not torture. Give them their desired martyrdom.
I read the other day that 80 were ready to be released and there was no country willing to take them.
If he wants them turned loose, make sure it’s in his neighborhood. You wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between them and the regular people.
I have a better idea. Take a ship out of mothballs and sail them half way to Mecca and let them swim the rest of the way.
Obama will half-keep his promise.
He’ll release the prisoners, but he will not close Guantanamo.
He’s well aware that America’s most secure prison is too valuable an asset to give up.
Where better to place his most feared enemies?
If we have to release them, then release them on the same island that Tom Hanks found himself on in the movie Cast Away. This time just leave ‘’Wilson’’back on the volley ball court.
Yes, I agree, defending America is just so OUT. Like doesn't anyone get it, let's move on, there's to much HOPE to be had.
He needs the space for reeducation camps.
Is there room for ALL of us FReepers there?
Maybe the University of Illinois will take when in to study under Bill Ayers as Ph.D candidates. They already have the same political and moral philosophy; kill everybody who disagrees and will not submit. What’s a few more tax-funded vipers loose among our children.
Target practice.
Turn em loose in Hyannis Port, the Kennedys believe in gun ownership for them and their security.
Gee, Barry why not rehabilitate these poor misunderstood terrorists by giving them work release jobs in Washington. I’m sure your girls would need a babysitter and I bet Reid and Pelosi could use someone to wash their windows and rake the leaves.
