Nov 20, 2008 7:13 pm US/Central Obama Advisers To Public: Temper Expectations
Reporting: Mike Flannery
CHICAGO (CBS) ― President-elect Barack Obama and his inner circle fear that some voters expect him to turn around the economy, wind down the war in Iraq and, perhaps, cure cancer -- all by the Fourth of July.
They know they must manage and lower those expectations, CBS 2 Political Editor Mike Flannery reports.
A top economic advisor to Obama had a glum warning for the rest of us Thursday morning: Neither the job market nor the stock market will be turning around any time soon.
"This might be a long haul," said Robert Reich, who was President Bill Clinton's secretary of labor. "2009 is going to be a very hard year. Some economists say we won't be out of this for two years, others are saying it may be three, or four, maybe five years."
Now on Obama's transition team, Reich worries about what happens after the new president is sworn in Jan. 20.
"We all have to be very careful about the expectations that we are putting on this man, our president-elect," Reich said. "If we all assume it's going to be the first 100 days, we're going to be disappointed."
The man who was Obama's chief campaign strategist is moving to lower expectations, too.
"We are inheriting an array problems unlike any president has faced, maybe since Franklin Roosevelt in 1932," David Axelrod said. "It's not gonna be easy, not gonna be quick."
Rick Jasculca worked for President Jimmy Carter, President Clinton and Sen. Hillary Clinton. He said Obama will need every bit of his skill as a communicator.
"If people see you reaching across the aisle and they see you making progress -- going forward rather than going backward -- I think people will give you the benefit of the doubt," Jasculca said.
Added Axelrod: "One of his great strengths is he is never too high, he's never too low -- he's very focused."
I have a friend with two small rental homes. Right after the election their black tennant called and told them the rent was too high and needed to be lowered. Landlord said, “no.” So the tennant said, “obama is going to help us now. If you don’t lower the rent, we’re moving. obama will help us find a place to live with lower rent.”
These people truly believe obama is going to personally take care of their day to day living expenses RIGHT AWAY!
When it doesn’t happen, on whom are they going to take out their anger and frustration? I’m very much afraid it’s going to be me. You just know obama is going to pass the buck and blame everyone but himself. Things could become very dangerous is cities with large populations of low income blacks who drank the kool-aid.
Most of my liberal friends thought they were gonna get gubmint health insurance in 1993, so theys could quit workin’ fer da man and start a career in “public service”. If Clinton had passed universal health care, we might have had 25 million “community organizers” in this country. (As it was we had a least one too many.)
Its Husseins fault!

Damned right it is! He claimed that the instant he was sure of the nomination the oceans stopped rising and the planet started to heal and people could find jobs etc. Then he told the Denver crowd that he would defeat poverty, disease and climate change.
Want to know why expectations are high, messiah? Look in the mirror. This is going to be the most spectacular failure in the history of America BEFORE the inauguration!
I herewith repeat my prediction made before anything was settled in the primaries. Within two years or less (right now it looks like two months) those who swore we could not have a worse president will wish they had W. back. Of course they will never be adult enough to admit it.
I mean, he is His Holy Omnipotence and Most High Overlord of The Universe, isn’t he?
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I don’t think he ever actually used those EXACT words but he did say that he would DEFEAT POVERTY, DISEASE AND CLIMATE CHANGE! That’s close enough.
yeah but..
I’m hoping as to when we can find out soon what it was we once were?
Cuz - once we were something. But now we’re not what we once were.
And I don’t know when we were something we aren’t now.
So - once we get back to being what we were, I want to know exactly what that is!!
Any word on that?
Should I temper my expectations on that too?
Good luck lowering this guys expectations:

Why? He looks like a perfectly reasonable individual to me. Could be I need my eyes checked, huh?

I see you listened well to the “Great Orator”...heh,heh,heh.
???
You mean, the Messiah is a Liah?
“You mean, the Messiah is a Liah”?
That seems a polite way of saying he is full of crap.
And yes i do think this assclown is a socialist front man and a liar.
“I see you listened well to the Great Orator...heh,heh,heh.”
I am a bit entertained at his ability to spew garbage as the world herald’s his Coming.
Surely you are not implying that American voters are so staggeringly stupid they elected this steaming pantload Obama because they believed the same exact lie about a “middle class tax cut” that Clinton told in 1992 to get elected? Does this mean that we can expect the biggest Democrat tax hike in history next year, just like what happened with Clinton in 1993?
Say it’s not so, ‘O’!
The Messiah can’t be a Liah!
We actually aren't the people we've been waiting for, either. But Change, you're gonna get. In spades.
The ambassador of Kenya says that obama was born in Kenya and that his birth place has become a national shrine.
Unbelievable. A radio station can do this, but the DNC and Congress can't. Worthless, worthless, pathetic robots.
I'll go have a listen to the audio at that link. Thanks.
