GM opens second India plant

TALEGAON, India: General Motors Corp. opened a second plant in India on Tuesday, boosting its production capacity from 85,000 to 225,000 vehicles a year.

The factory is part of GM's aggressive push into emerging markets, which have helped cushion the beleaguered auto giant from falling sales in the developed world. It also furthers the Indian government's ambition to turn the country into a manufacturing hub for small vehicles.

"We believe India in three to four years will be a significant source of profit for us," said GM Asia Pacific President Nick Reilly.

The first car — a pint-sized red Chevrolet Spark draped with marigolds — rolled off the production line at 11:25 a.m.

GM invested US$300 million in the new plant in Talegaon near Pune, a fast-growing manufacturing hub about two hours outside Mumbai, the nation's financial capital. The factory will start by producing the Spark — a mini-car introduced in 2007 that is GM's most popular local model — for the domestic market.

No they don’t. If GM is given money to survive, part of the survival plan will be to eventually close UAW plants and move work off shore.

In the future I foresee entire corporate headquarters to move off shore not just plants. I am of the opinion that is what was behind sale of Budweiser as it prepares to move its headquarters out of the country and reduce its tax liability.

Good. Less money for the UAW and the Democrat party. Thee vehicles will probably be better built than any of the junk that comes out of the UAW-infested auto plants in the USA.

Silcon Valley looks like India west. Massive commercial vacancies and the dot commies are moving to India and China.

Many large American corporations have already started shifting their corporate headquarters and manufacturing facilities over seas.

With a US Legislature and labor force that demands 100K per year each, unlimited health care, retirement pension, etc, etc. You can bet they will find a way to survive. It’s the law of the jungle.

What else will happen when you bite the hand that feeds you, you kill the goose that laid the golden egg or you cut your nose off to spite your face?

You can argue that Budweiser sold itself to avoid paying U.S. corporate income tax on beer it sells outside the U.S. But InBev will still be liable for U.S. corporate income tax for beer it sells inside the U.S.

The only difference, really, is that InBev doesn't have to pay U.S. corporate income tax for Beck's it sells in Germany (just for the Beck's it sells in the U.S.).

I have no problem with that (well actually I do, but I understand why they move offshore). But I don’t want to pay taxes so they can set up shop in foreign countries.

Let them tax the citizens of the countries they are going to if they need a handout.

They cannot afford to operate in this country because of the Unions. The so called “Bail-out” it what it will take for GM to make their debt payments to the Unions and “Job Bank” scams.

It’s not GM’s fault other than they bent over backwards to try to work with the Unions. The Unions just kept bleeding their host until the host started to die. This is the result.

And, the Feds should NOT bail this mess out. The survival of GM will simply shift to over seas markets. America is getting what they deserve.
