Boehner Says House GOP Not Shifting to the Right; Other Leaders Disagree
CNSNEWS ^ | Nov 20th, 2008 | Josiah Ryan

House Republicans are not shifting to the political right, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) told CNSNews.com on Wednesday, just hours after two of the top three GOP leadership spots were won by conservative lawmakers in an internal leadership election.

Members Reps. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), Mike Pence (R-Ind.), and John Mica (R-Fla.), however, told CNSNews.com that they think the conference is shifting to the political right.

But Boehner said, “No, I don’t think it’s right or left. It’s what are the issues Americans are concerned about, and how do we build solutions on our principles? It’s not left or right.

“That’s minimizing and marginalizing the situation,” Boehner told

Make the pitch that the party is returning to principles of limited government, fiscal responsibility, free markets, protecting the Constitution, etc.

Definitely.

Still, (Newt) was a great political thinker...

That remains true today. Any GOP nominee should have him in the "kitchen cabinet".

Send the RNC envelopes back empty with “Dump Boehner” written on them.

Hear hear. A bit of sublety should work, but the conservative principles should be upheld through actions. If their actions don’t match I’ll want heads on the plate. But not before.

“Boehner is the leader. What individual congressmen say doesn’t make the headlines as much as his would.”

You must have missed the leadership changes that just occured:

“But Pence, who was unanimously voted in as the Republican Conference Chairman on Wednesday, told CNSNews.com that conservatism is the current trend among House Republicans.

Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.)“What I saw today in the Republican conference was an affirmation that the way back for the Republican Party is a return to timeless principles,” Pence told CNSNews.com. “My unanimous selection was not so much an affirmation of me as a person, but my conservative principles.”

Pence is not just “another member,” but the unanimous choice for Republican Conference Chairman. That is every bit a change to the right as Waxman defeating Dingell is a left-ward shift for the Dems. Boner contradicts Pence’s astute observation upon HIS selection by pouring cold water on the ideological implications. Bad form, but true to form for Boner.

agreed, And one (very) bad vote does not negate years & years of strong conservatism.

Are you in high school? John B O E H N E R ( pronounced BAY-NER) has been a good conservative representative for years. You do not do Pence’s cause much good by using goofy potty language to describe the minority leader of the HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. Frankly, calling Boehner BONER insures that I won’t listen to your boy Pence. If this is indicative of his followers, I’ve had enough of folks who try to destroy and mock truly conservative leaders.

The leader of Republicans in the House is likely to get more press than the Republican Conference Chair. Boehner is the minority leader and was re-elected. I’m not up for folks personal ambitions to be the leader and if the party remains divided like this then it won’t stand.

John Boehner doesn’t have to move right - he is right. He has had one bad vote I know of. He has been a strong pro-life force, and is a seasoned and decent individual. He doesn’t deserve the flack he is getting. Attack that vote, I’m with you. Attack him in such an immature fashion, you’ve lost me and a lot of others who see the big picture of what we are facing. Plain and simple, you will never get good leaders if the good one’s in power now are destroyed along the way. Nobody will sign up for that garbage. Get over that Pence isn’t the minority leader and lets let the minority leader lead. If he screws it up then attack what he did, but stop it with the idiotic “BONER” stuff. It is unbecoming and un-Reaganesque.

no, this is boehner being smart.
we are heading down the path of socialism at lightening speed, AMERICANS are not going to like it, not one bit (except the usual suspects)
he is saying he is doing what is RIGHT for the american people, not party, on the principles of conservatism (without saying the word).
we have got to wise up folks if we want to win 2012, or for that matter 2010. watch what he is doing, not what he is saying...
he is trying to unite us as a country against the marxist, commie aholes currently in power. showing conservative principals is far more important than speaking about them, it is something the people understand!
we have got to relax!

There is only ONE answer IF the GOP Leader panders to the middle/left... WE NEED to have a MASS EXODUS of the TRUE CONSERVATIVES to a different party... a NEW PARTY!! That will either change things in the GOP or kill it for good....which I believe the later is going to need to happen.

You do not splinter the troops when trying to win a war. "United we stand , divided we fall" does have meaning.

When a real leader fails, he falls on his spear.

Boehner is out for himself.

The sooner he is gone the better.

We would be very short of leaders with this philosophy. I would rather see them go to plan B, when they have found out that plan A was a loser.

I don’t think GWB even liked Trent, but Trent was always trying to get leftists to like him. GWB put the knife in Trent’s side in 2002.
