Fatal bullet traced to bar owner (Illegal robbers alert)

One of four men killed during a shootout at a Marrero bar last month was hit by a bullet fired by the bar owner as he exchanged gunfire with robbers, according to testimony Tuesday during a court hearing for two of the five suspects.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office Detective Keith Locascio testified that one victim was killed by a .38-caliber bullet and, separately, that bar owner Wallace Gomez was the only person armed with a .38-caliber pistol when gunmen robbed Gomez's bar Oct. 30.

Gomez, 78, of Marrero; his brother, Beuford Gomez, 75, of Marrero; Jeffrey Carmardelle, 71, of Marrero; and Wayne Hebert, 64, of Harvey, died in the early afternoon shootout that apparently began as the robbers were leaving.

Attorneys representing Rigoberto Funes, 20, of Honduras, and Jose Cornejo-Garcia, 22, of El Salvador, sought Tuesday to arrange for bail and for a reduction of charges from first-degree murder. The men and their accomplices do not speak English, attorneys have said, and at least some are in the United States illegally.

About 10 family members and friends of the victims attended the proceeding, some seeing the suspects in person for the first time and others fighting back tears.

The hearing was delayed briefly because a court-appointed interpreter fluent in Spanish was not available.

"They were speaking pretty good English when they were telling you to give your money and your wallet," one family member said to another in the courtroom.

Funes; his brother, Mario Funes, 26, also of Honduras; Cornejo-Garcia; Renil Escobar Rivera, 29; and Pedro Navarette Duran, 32, planned the robbery the night before they carried it out, Locascio said.

The Funes brothers and Rivera were armed and went inside the bar at 6109 Fourth St., Locascio said. Duran and

I was surprised by the ages of the victims. I'm glad a deputy happened across this and caught a few before they all fled.

Gee, armed illegals. Who would have thought?

Glad the bastard is dead and his buddies can be indicted under the felony murder rule and get the chair (New Orleans, Ray Nagin will pardon them, if he could), but they will probably get 25-life, at the taxpayers expense.

Pehaps the new Gov., Bobby Jindal (R) can create a new law, the “The Illegal Immigrants Who Murder Execution Act”.

Time to fry the bastards. The last month has seen many killings by illegals from Mexico and Central America. It is time to stop this and an execution is the best way.

“An executed killer never kills again.”

And in Louisiana, how about opening up the “old” Angola prison? That in itself is a deterent to all but the insane.

I just enjoy stories like this one, written by “journalists” with no knowledge of firearms, whatsoever....

Louisiana will fry them as quick as Texas. Proportionately there are not many illegals in Louisiana. Louisiana is not a very welcoming state to illegals in spite of being right next to Texas.

BTW Ray Nagin is in New Orleans, Marrero is a different world. Believe it or not Ray Nagin is not so bad when you look at the other people who could have been elected Mayor. And Ray did cross party lines once to endorse Bobby Jindal. I'm not saying I like Nagin or anything.

Understand completely. I had a similar experience last night. She looked a lot better after 8 beers.

I didn’t notice that. A .38 caliber is a different caliber then a .380? When reading I just assumed .38 special or such and didn’t catch it.

I’ll try this again....

Lots of “.38” cal rounds exist. Most of them relics.

The “.38 Special” is actually a .357 diameter round.

That’s why you can shoot .38 specials in a .357mag, but not the other way around, due to the difference in case lengths.

the .380 (auto) (9mm Kurz) is a whole ‘nother animal. Short auto case and not a .38 that you can shoot from a “.38” revolver.

The real ammo heads should be weighing in, shortly......

Same diameter but different weights.

As noted above, the .380 is a lower-powered automatic round with a shorter case, lighter slug and smaller powder charge than a .38

9mm (.380) is actually .354 caliber. .357mag/38SPL are .357 caliber. The cases are different too. The .380 is a typical taper crimped semi-auto round that head spaces on the case mouth. Spent cases are ejected upon firing. The .38SPL is typically fired from a revolver. The rimmed case remained in the revolver cylinder after firing. The typical .380 bullet weighs about 110 gr. The 38SPL will range from 127 gr to 158 gr. The .357mag bullet weights are typically 125 gr to 180 gr. As you mentioned, the .357mag case is slightly longer to prevent inserting it into the 38SPL cylinder.

A caliber is an approximate diameter of the bullet. So you are saying that a .38 and a .38 special are a different caliber? I did not know that and I own a .38 special. I also own a .357 and I shoot .38 special rounds out of it more then .357 rounds due to cost. I did not know that a .38 special was actually a .357 but it makes sense as you can not fit a larger caliber in a smaller caliber chamber. I also own a .380 but it is a piece of crap and would best be suited for use as a fishing weight.I also own several 9mm.

The bar owner was 78 and for him to have a .38 would not be unusual. I have a few friends that are older then me and they all have .38's and ammunition. Apparently when they were young you could pick up a .38 very cheap.

I think I'll have to bust out my caliper and start measuring diameters.

Damn, I thought we would be talking about illegals and we are talking about calibers. I guess illegals do come in different calibers.

As an aside, I would clean the cylinder carefully after a long range session with 38s - and I’m sure you do. The cylinder can erode from a steady diet of 38s in a 357 wheelgun.

I also carry a 38 (rated for +P) - good round, easy to control with weak side hand and so forth.

I concur. Not only erosion, but the build up may impair the opening of the .357mag case mouth causing a pressure spike. If the cylinder isn't good for that pressure, it will explode in your face.

I run the .357mag/.38SPL version of the BoreSnake through the cylinder charge holes to clear away the accumulation. The "lead away" pads do a find job of polishing the face of the cylinder that interfaces with the forcing cone.
