Pioneer Behind Grass-Roots Conservative Web Site Gets Ready to Do Battle Again (Free Republic)

A Democrat is poised to take the reins of power in Washington, D.C., and Fresno resident Jim Robinson is feeling a sense of deja vu.
It was President Bill Clinton's 1992 election that sparked Robinson's political activism, driving him to create a Web site that made him a grass-roots leader among conservatives before Clinton's term was over.
This year, as Barack Obama prepares to sweep into office on another tide of Democratic votes, Robinson and denizens of that Web site, freerepublic.com, are preparing to do battle again.
"We'll double and redouble our efforts to fight for what is right," Robinson says. "We've got people just spitting nails."
Free Republic, founded by Robinson in September 1996, doesn't attract much attention from the national press and is not well-known among political experts. Many of its postings have a decidedly fringe feel.
But long before Red State, Daily Kos and Little Green Footballs arrived on the Internet political scene, Free Republic was building an audience -- and becoming a formidable political force among conservatives and libertarians that is admired even by some who disagree with its political philosophy.
In a study last month by the Internet ratings firm comScore, Free Republic ranked fifth among political blogs, just behind heavyweights The Huffington Post, Politico, Drudge Report and RealClearPolitics.

There is no other site on the web like FR. I am so glad FR exists, and my appreciation has grown even greater after this election when some of the bloggers I respected have gone a little squishy.

LOL, btw young Kirk managed to dump a vintage mid 60’s vette off the edge of his future.

I'm thinking that a lot of people really don't even understand what is meant by “leftist, liberal, Marxist, socialist”. They just don't have even the most basic knowledge of conservative vs. leftist principles. I like the idea of framing our debate differently, coming up with some new words that are more understandable. If kids aren't learning these principles in school, then we have to teach them the principles via internet, advertisement spots during shows they watch like “American Idol”, just whatever it takes to get our ideas out there. We have to start teaching and convincing again that these ideas are good and the foundation of what makes our country great, then put the candidates out there. It does no good for conservatives to label a political candidate a Marxist, even if he is, if people don't even understand that word anymore - it just doesn't connect. If we can connect it to “freedom”, “prosperity”, etc., maybe that would resonate more.
Of course the best thing is to change our education system so that these principles of freedom are taught again, but until that time, we've got to fight the battles where we can now.

“Righteous” vs. “evil” works just fine.

"And Free Republic played a key role in driving an anonymous chain e-mail that falsely claimed Obama had concealed ties to radical Islam, according to Danielle Allen, a professor of social science at the Princeton, N.J.-based Institute for Advanced Study who studied the rumor."
Ah, yes...the lovely Danielle.
ROTFLOL!
Will she ever get anything right? ;o)
If Danielle's observations mean anything, then...we rock!
Thank you for the post, kristinn, and thank you for the forum, Jim and John.
