Obama seeks immediate action to curb emissions
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | November 19, 2008 | David R. Baker

In his first speech on global warming since winning the election, President-elect Barack Obama promised Tuesday to set stringent limits on greenhouse gases, saying the need is too urgent for delay.

Many observers had expected Obama to avoid tackling such a complex, contentious issue early in his administration. But in videotaped comments to the Governors' Global Climate Summit in Beverly Hills on Tuesday, he called for immediate action.

"Now is the time to confront this challenge once and for all," Obama said. "Delay is no longer an option. Denial is no longer an acceptable response. The stakes are too high, the consequences too serious."

I don’t think he’s stupid at all. This is very deliberate.

Notice that it comes right smack in the middle of discussion over automaker bailouts. Just one more step in the plan.

Al Gore:

"The bold steps that are needed to solve the climate crisis are exactly the same steps that ought to be taken in order to solve the economic crisis and the energy security crisis."

"Economists across the spectrum - agree that "large and rapid investments in a jobs-intensive infrastructure initiative" is the best way to revive our economy in a quick and sustainable way."

"we should begin the planning and construction of a unified national smart grid for the transport of renewable electricity from the rural places where it is mostly generated to the cities where it is mostly used." "we should help America's automobile industry (not only the Big Three but the innovative new startup companies as well) to convert quickly to plug-in hybrids that can run on the renewable electricity that will be available as the rest of this plan matures. In combination with the unified grid, a nationwide fleet of plug-in hybrids...."

Forbes:

What happens when you don't build more power plants? Get ready for spiking electricity rates, brownouts and even blackouts as demand soarsIf you think runaway oil prices are upsetting, just wait for what's in store for electricity. http://www.qando.net/details.aspx?Entry=9710

“Well, crashing the economy will certainly curb emissions.”

This idiot may very well carry through with his idiotic plans.

And we’ll be breathing “Clean Air” while we’re starving and freezing to death.

He must act very quickly or the mountain of contrary evidence will bury the entire scheme.

Ah ha! There is the reason for the urgency. If you are going to jump out in front of a parade and yell "follow me!" you must do it before the parade gets to its destination. Now is the time to get out in front of the stop-warming parade because climate stabilization / cooling is upon us. The O-child doesn't want to miss the golden opportunity to claim "See, my policies worked!!!"

"From start to start up, it has taken about 10 years to get a Nuclear Plant on line."

Yeah, but probably eight of those ten years is fighting the frivolous lawsuits and un-necessary hearing delays. That's why I mentioned "streamlining" the process.

We've been here before:

In 1977, Carter convinced the Democratic Congress to create the United States Department of Energy (DoE) in order to conserve energy. Carter wore cardigan sweaters, had solar hot water panels installed on the roof of the White House, had a wood stove in his living quarters, ordered the General Services Administration to turn off hot water in some federal facilities, and requested that Christmas decorations remain dark in 1979 and 1980. Nationwide, controls were put on thermostats in government and commercial buildings to prevent people from raising temperatures in the winter above 65 degrees Fahrenheit or lowering them in the summer below 78 degrees Fahrenheit.

The coal industry is going to get what it voted for.

But they won’t be alone. This will effect EVERYTHING that emits CO2: natural gas, oil and oil byproducts, propane, wood, whatever burns for fuel.....
