McALLEN, Texas — A South Texas grand jury has indicted Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on charges related to the alleged abuse of prisoners in Willacy County's federal detention centers.

The indictment criticizes Cheney's investment in the Vanguard Group, which holds interests in the private prison companies running the federal detention centers. It accuses Cheney of a conflict of interest and "at least misdemeanor assaults" on detainees by working through the prison companies.

Gonzales is accused of using his position while in office to stop an investigation into abuses at the federal detention centers.

Wouldn’t that open up all investors to being indicted? Those people are nuts.

How many thousands of people invest with Vanguard? Why aren’t they being indicted?

“...The indictment criticizes Cheney’s investment in the Vanguard Group, which holds interests in the private prison companies running the federal detention centers...”

Cheney owned stock, therefore he is directly responsible for the management of the company. Total politically motivated BS.

Is this the same DA who indicted The Hammer and Kaye B. Hutchinson? If so, he needs to have a bar complaint filed.

I think it mainly makes the prosecutor and grand jury look politically motivated and dishonest. Indicting somebody for investing in a private prison company is insane.

If they had stuck to Gonzales it would not have been as quickly dismissible but still would likely have been out of their jurisdiction.

I’m sure that Cheney will make so much money off of this as to be able to bailout the economic crisis single-handed. If not, he should get advice from Hillary! Dipsticks all!

I wonder, after Tom Delay, if Texas Grand Juries might, from time to time, politicize the penal code?

“I think it mainly makes the prosecutor and grand jury look politically motivated and dishonest”

What is it they say, you can get a grand jury to indict a sandwich if you’re interested? As for the prosecutor, they have all sorts of motivations having nothing to do with zealous application of the law. Whom they chase after has all too much to do with their own discretion.
