Targeted L.A. restaurant donates to group challenging Prop. 8 (Al-Gayda victory)

Employees of the Los Angeles restaurant that came under fire this week after a manager gave $100 to the campaign to ban same-sex marriage in California said they had made a $500 contribution to the advocacy group that is raising money to challenge Proposition 8.

The Thursday online donation to Equality California, an advocacy group for the gay and lesbian community, came at precisely 7:22:03 p.m., about 22 minutes into a planned demonstration outside the restaurant's doors for the second night in a row.

"It will go toward our work, and our work includes working to overturn Proposition 8," said Ali Bay, a spokeswoman for Equality California. "We're working legislatively and through the courts to promote equality for the [lesbian and gay] community."

Over the last week, online social networking sites and blogs have urged people to boycott El Coyote Mexican Cafe on Beverly Boulevard because of the $100 donation by Marjorie Christoffersen, a manager at the restaurant and a daughter of El Coyote's owner.

Christoffersen, a Mormon, met with protesters Wednesday, and at one point broke down in tears. But some activists said they still faulted her for making the donation.

According to another manager, Arnoldo Archila, El Coyote employees pooled their money to make the donation -- though it wasn't clear who actually contributed. He said Christoffersen was not involved in the decision.

“The man had beliefs and he caved, its pretty simple.”

How do you know what the employees believed? Perhaps they were against prop 8 all along?

There is so much I could say that would be snarky.
But I will not, at least not now.
Caving is caving. You either stand by your beliefs or you do not and justify why not.
The question I have for you is were is your line in the sand? It appears by your responses that it would move as the wind shifts.

I've been following this story thru various blogs. It is horrific. Here is an fellow citizen who has simply exercised her rights, guaranteed by the Constitution, to engage in free speech. For that, she has been publicly humiliated, slandered & subjected to a barrage of filth & hate. No doubt, she will be forced to leave her job.

THIS IS A CAUTIONARY TALE FOR ALL OF US. This not not about some little Tex-Mex, Mom ‘n Pop restaurant in LA. It is not even about Prop 8 & the definition of marriage.

It is about yet another special interest group in our country that has been given free rein to use intimidation & threat to curtail Constitutionally protected rights. They see it as their right to silence us. Not to disagree with us, but to silence us.

And more & more of us are falling silent.

That's how these people seem to always get their way whether it's the race hustlers or whatever. It's time we stood up and not kowtow to them anymore, FWIW

Brushcop has a pretty salient explanation of my understanding of the situation in Post #46.

If you'll don your tinfoil hats with me, I'll go a step further. If I wanted to create an ideal honey-pot to bleed off all the opposition energy from conservatives, I'd think about creating freerepublic.com as a magnet for people to get their disgust for the destruction of our country off their chest.

It would attract the affluent people who could otherwise send money, work in campaigns, go door-to-door, attend city council meetings, read local public school curricula...

Instead we can get on here, fire off a few hot missives, and feel like we've said our peace...'to hell with it all.' I'm beginning to wonder...does FR really help the conservative cause, overall?

(/Tinfoil alert off!)

Ok. If I get this correct.
People on FR complain and rant but do not really do anything.
Wow, just wow.
I would have given people on FR way more credit, than you have.

Tin foil? Nah, I think you have a valid point.

The fact is, personally, I spend too much time here. I should be devoting the time to my business. My point is that the time I do spend here pales in comparison to the time it would take to protest as these militants do, I would also assume my position is typical for a lot of fellow FReepers so yes it does make us feel like we're involved to some extent. But, does it really accompish anything? In reality, probably not as much as we would like.

Like Rush says, "when is our turn to riot"? The time appears to be getting close.

True.

People like Kristinn at Walter Reed and patriciaruth who have adopted troopers at Bagram...they do things.

jveritas did yeoman's work on translating Iraqi intel.

But for political involvement for the positive? I have seen very little "support Mitch McConnell's narrow attempt to halt bill S.1234 in the senate."

Mostly one-shot swipes at this or that report of what some (R) said to some reporter out of context.

True. Hey, maybe we should start a "our turn to riot" PING list ! =)

For me, fr's an easy way to aggregate news articles without having to read the crazy lefty rants of the general internet population...like the youtube comments...scary!

What are you my neighbor?
You do not have a clue as to what I do or do not do.
Just because I don’t talk about it doesn’t mean I don’t do it. [Just like many others, who don’t talk about what they do, they just do.]

(And no I am not going to tell you.)

“There is so much I could say that would be snarky.”

Snark away. I don't care. The question I have for you is how do you know the employees “caved”? The manager isn't the one who donated to the homosexuals, so she didn't “cave”. The employees didn't contribute to prop 8 originally, so their subsequent contribution to the homosexuals didn't cause them to “cave” either.

One of her parents owns the restaurant so I doubt she will lose her job.

In a little over a week, many Californians and Americans have been subjected to Hate Crimes committed by criminal Christophobic gay deviates.

We don’t march and threaten gays with axes, axe handles, ball bats and other weapons, as done by Hate Filled Gays in a church as shown in the picture linked below:

Dining at El Coyote has become like dining in a war zone. Let me correct that: It IS dining in a war zone. Over the weekend, patrons were given their money back because the experience was not just intolerable, but frightening.
A tour bus stopped to give French tourists a taste of “local color.” They were surrounded by vicious thugs, chanting “Hate on a Plate! No on Eight…”
That will be, most likely, the last tour bus El Coyote will see.
I don’t care who owns El Coyote. This woman has been “made an example of” by these lunatics. Why? B/c she’s a Mormon & Mormons took a stand against Same Sex Marriage.
Here’s a quote from one of the blogs:
“If Marjorie loves El Coyote as much as she says, she needs bid farewell to her job. And maybe the condescending idea of how you can “love” someone and be their “friend” yet feel they are not worthy of equal rights needs be tossed off the back of the bus.
At the end of the meeting, no one felt like eating, despite the offer of a free meal—Marjorie’s views had left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth.”
