The Center-Right Nation Exits Stage Left

Here's the main thought Republicans are consoling themselves with these days: Notwithstanding President-elect Barack Obama, a nearly filibuster-proof Democratic majority in the Senate and the largest Democratic majority in the House of Representatives since 1993, the United States is still a center-right country. Sure, voters may be angry with Republicans now, but eventually, as the Bush years recede and the GOP modernizes its brand, a basically right-tilting electorate will come back home. Or, in the words of the animated rock band the Gorillaz, "I'm useless, but not for long/The future is comin' on."

Thus Rich Lowry, the editor of National Review, in Outlook last week: The United States "is indeed, as conservatives have been insisting in recent days, a center-right country." On election night, former Bush guru Karl Rove opined on Fox News, "Barack Obama understands this is a center-right country, and he smartly and wisely ran a campaign that emphasized it." And it's not just conservative pundits and operatives singing this song. Take Newsweek editor Jon Meacham, who wrote an Oct. 27 cover essay entitled "America the Conservative," which argued that Obama will have to "govern a center-right nation" that "is more instinctively conservative than it is liberal."

The only problem: It isn't true. Or at least, not anymore. If you'd asked me a year ago whether the United States is really a center-right nation, I would have said yes -- after pausing for a second to contemplate the GOP's big congressional losses in 2006.

Well, he undermined me in my first foray into a significant conservative effort and I have not forgotten it.

Real Americans - those who believe in the Constitution and the American ideal - haven’t lost faith in our country, they have lost faith in the government.

It is apparant that there is only one political party with two competing branches and they are all slime balls.

Politicians and bureaucrats cannot be relied on to enforce the constitution and to protect the rights and well being of law abiding, productive citizens because they are the violators, they are the criminals, they are the thiefs and law breakers, they are the ones destroying America.

Gun and ammo sales aren’t skyrocketing just because the Obama administration will implement severe gun control.

Gun and ammo sales are up because people have decided that we are at the place where we will have to draw the line.
The place where we will have to say “ENOUGH!”

Thomas Jefferson:

“What country before ever existed a century and a half without a rebellion? And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure.”

Nobody can turn a country into argentina, that takes special talent, it’s above Obama’s pay grade.

no but a Kirchner can turn argentina into an economic basketcase and Obama can certainly do that here too.

According to Tom DeLay on C-Span yesterday, 35 million conservative voters stayed home during this election - don’t know if the figure is accurate, but if it is, shame on them........

Check out the Battle Ground poll? Year after year, 60% of Americans describe themselves as “somewhat or very” Conservative. That number did not change in 2006, 2007 or 2008.”

We keep consoling ourselves with that... I suggest you do something - Do your own poll. Call up 100 people. Ask them the conservative/liberal question ... then ask the ‘who’d you vote for question’ for president, congress, etc.

then ask if they think Obama’s a liberal.

Then ask more about their real positions on guns, abortion, marriage, taxes, immigration, Iraq, govt spending, bailouts, S-CHIP, welfare, affirmative action, school choice, etc.

by the time you are done, will those 60% conservative-leaners sound like real conservatives or not?
Are conservatives getting fooled into voting for liberals or just not as conservative afterall. THAT is the question!

“Obama ran on a conservative platform - tax cuts, no gun control, etc. He invoked Reagan’s name at one point. “

Good observation. I dont think people have illusions about Obama being conservative but the middle-class tax cut fooled EVERYBODY - people think that Obama will give it to them.

We need to be ready to fire off our volleys of letters-to-editor as Obama does the predictable thing and break his impossible promises.

...I’m not commenting on your post, but I was a bit curious about your tagline, thinking that ‘nomini tuo’ should have been ‘nomino tuo’, representing second declension dative case, until I examined further and found that ‘nomen’ is, in fact, third declension, and as such, requires ‘i’ in the dative singlular...kudos on making me think a little bit harder this morning...

Its the motto of the
“Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon” aka Templars. I admire them. They did a good job until the western European Kiings cut the ground out from under them.

I get those declensions mixed up too - Nomen, Nominis, Nomini, etc.
