Voinovich wants bailout money for auto industry
The Columbus Dispatch ^ | November 16, 2008 | Jonathan Riskind

Posted on 11/16/2008 2:23:56 PM PST by Comparative Advantage

Sen. George V. Voinovich, R-Ohio, said last week that federal bailout dollars should go to the U.S. auto industry.

Voinovich isn't saying how much he thinks should be handed out, but the Bush administration has expressed opposition to extending the bailout directly to the auto industry. Many Democrats are calling for a rescue package of $25 billion to $50 billion for the industry.

Voinovich, co-chairman of the Senate Auto Caucus, "believes helping the automakers remain viable is truly putting Main Street over Wall Street," said Voinovich spokesman Chris Paulitz. Voinovich is working on the matter with Democratic Sens. Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, Paulitz said.

"He has signaled his support to Sens. Levin and Stabenow and is working with them on a letter to their colleagues to make this a reality ... during the lame-duck" session of Congress, Paulitz said. "He also wants to ensure that the companies qualifying for TARP (Troubled Assets Relief Program) funding are truly viable in order to protect taxpayers down the road."

Ohio's RINO senator has bellied up to the taxpayer trough to give welfare to the UAW.

He's up in '10.

Total compensation (wage and benefits) average per hour is $74. Compare that to $48 for Toyota workers.

NO money for you!

Just save the Corvette, Lexus beats Cadillac IMO. Make heavy trucks and that’s it. They had 30 years to catch on to what’s happening in Japan and Germany, if they can’t figure it out by now, forget it.

To be fair, he’s between a rock and a hard place. Ohio’s economy is very dependent on high-end manufacturing and is already near the highest in the nation.

I’ve said that we needed each of the 3 seats above 40 to maintain the filibuster so 2 or 3 senators (even if they are RINOs) can have cover when elections come up in ‘10.

Still, we are in for a tough 2 years. Republicans have more seats up in 2010 and there are no open seats on the democratic side and only one incumbent won with less than 55% (Ken Salazaar from Blue Colorado).

I already wrote this clown about the housing bailout. His response was a tepid, "I understand your frustration, but....."

I may as well vote for his Dem opponent. Hopefully, a real conservative will step forward between now and 2010 to challenge him.

If I hear one more idiot say $75 I’m going to scream.

Most of the skilled trades make around $25-$27 per hour. It depends. I’ve heard people complain about this but I’d like to see THEM work in one of those god-awful plants that are like Siberia in winter and Hell in summer.

I don’t know what the assembly or production folks make.

In the meantime, Ford is now hiring the new guys in at around $12 per hour. How can a man (or woman) support a family on that. Even here in Ohio, that is peanuts. My little niece is a dental assistant - just 19 years old - not a hygienist - just assistant and SHE makes $14 per hour. I wasn’t making much more than that as a paralegal with many years experience (a few years ago).

There is no way to figure some of the salaries. Every year Parade magazine does a very eye-opening article on “What People Make” and you’d be surprised at how many low-paying jobs there exist for college grads and how many high-paying jobs there are for people who just don’t mind working their butts off....

Even some lawyers make peanuts.

My personal philosophy is simple. I think people who make things and build things should make GOOD money. I think the people who design these things should as well. Lives DEPEND on it. Bridges, buildings, cars, and other things that are not built right can kill or injure. If the guy at Starbucks screws up a latte, whoopdedoo.

This is BS. I have no idea where this info comes from. This might be what the companies PAY when you factor in total benefits but there is no way. I have family in the auto industry and this is a crock. I WISH they were making $73 an hour. That is $151,000 plus a year.

I can’t wait to share this so they can all laugh. This is pathetic.

Not only that but consider this: If GM alone tanks, you are talking about millions of people will be out of jobs - where are they going to go?? Starbucks can’t hire them all. Hey, even Starbucks is closing locations.

All I can imagine is all these millions of people now needing unemployment bennies and other help. There was an article in the Plain Dealer the other day stating how the state of Ohio’s unemployment fund is perilously low.

All of this would put a great burden on the states that have these workers. The end result = more foreclosures and more instability. If this happens, I could see a depression far worse than the one that happened in the 30’s. The reason is because people were much more decent and civil back then and did not have the “gimme gimme mindset.”

He knows he’s in trouble in 2010, Ohio is blue and getting bluer. No room at the inn for a conservative, so putting on the suit of a RINO is the last refuge of the desperate. And there are a lot of those measuring themselves for that RINO suit.

The Ford Motor Co. said they could not make a profit building economical, compact cars, with the wages they are paying. Shut them down.
