Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco, said today hes staying in Congress despite speculation he was being considered for Veteran Affairs secretary.
The Waco Democrat said Sunday he told President-elect Barack Obamas transition team that hell continue representing his Texas district where voters this month re-elected him to a 10th term.
Edwards, who is chairman of the House Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Committee, said he believed he could be more effective in Congress than the Cabinet.
Edwards defeated Republican Rob Curnock to win a 10th term on Nov. 4.
He was also reported to be on Obamas short list of potential running mates during the presidential campaign this summer.
A cabinet post in BO administration = political death
I think he realized it too. Especially how he lost some votes after endorsing BHO early in the race.
...especially if it involves a Dem from a Red State and involves a military role.
He has to offer these VP short list guys something, that’s how the game is played. The one who will get a major role will be Gov. Kaine, who can’t run again. Supreme Court? Something big for Kaine.
That is, TX is one bastion of conservatism which is vibrant and growing. Edwards may sense that the conservatives which surround him in TX don’t show signs of keeling over and dying. He may sense that the Hussein administration’s honeymoon days are numbered and doesn’t want to be involved in the Titantic.
I hope that is true as to being vibrant and growing but this last election gives pause to what maybe happening.....

He always runs by "saving the VA hospital in Waco." As if the Republican will throw them under the overpass of I-35.
He is toad.
Edwards had a closer-than-expected race this year.
Yes, he did! And I think it took him by surprise.
Ah this escaped my notice. Against what looks like a weak challenger.
How about former President George W. Bush pulling a John Quincy Adams?
Kidding!
I doubt he’s being seriously considered anyway. They’d lose the seat to the Republicans and they know it.
Chet seems to love to announce he’s not interested in positions he hasn’t been offered.
Just our luck. We are stuck with him until he either retires or dies. I’ll never understand why the GOP can’t field an attractive candidate in this district. You want to run???
LOL! NO, I’ll pass this time around. Maybe Margaret Mills will run? (After her current stint is through!)
RINO squish.
Eenie meenie, Margaret or Chet? This really isn’t a normal place to live, lol.
Lol.
I bet you’re dying to unload on Bush.
Let’s just say he has let me down profoundly. I don’t take much delight in ripping into him, truth be told.
