Heat with wood. I can heat my house for the winter for about $500 with 5 cords of wood and about half a tank of oil. Wood can be as cheap as free if you work at it throughout the year. This year 5 cords cost me about $200 and about 2 solid weeks of manual labor.
When I used dryer sheets, I saved them after the laundry was finished and they work the same as “Swiffers” for dusting. I no longer use the sheets since I got a new washer with the softener dispenser. Now I use about one tsp of softener and fill the rest of the way up with water....I don’t see any difference. I also saved egg shells...my tomatoes love them for the protein. I also started seeds in half egg shells which also worked great!
Never heard of the egg shell thing. Thanks!
Homemade Laundry Detergent:
(This stuff really works, all items can be purchased at Walmart)

If you pay more than $.97 for the Fels-Naptha, you shouldn’t.
The website is saying “under $200.00 which probably means $195.99.
Yep, I tried that and the cold rooms I rarely use got damp and moldy.
A lot of utilities are installing smart meters with or without your consent, which does exactly what this article suggests.
And I really don’t want to do laundry at midnight or 5 AM to save money.
Frugality should be a lifestyle to get out of debt or live on less money to achieve other goals like having a stay at home spouse. Frugality is good when the money saved enables other things like private school tuition or more charity. Living in misery to save money you won’t enjoy is a waste.
lol my post was from 2008
Living in misery to save money you wont enjoy is a waste.

That is the truth and we are buying a new RV while we can still get out there and enjoy it.
I agree that we subsidize farmers too much. With food prices so high, cutting the subsidies would lower our taxes AND make food stamps less necessary.
The fees on the phone bills are what pays for the “free” Obama phones.
If you are cooking, combine items. Make meatloaf for tonight and muffins for tomorrow at the same time.
When I buy coffee, I buy a bag of the generic stuff and a bag of brand name and mix them in a coffee can with a plastic lid. It still tastes good but you save some money. Especially if you can find it on sale and have a coupon.
I’m also making my own calendar for 2013. But this is more out of laziness than frugality: I don’t want to go to a store and buy one.
I started reading this without looking at the date. Then I came across the post that said gas was $1.80 in southern MS. Now, my sister just moved to Gulfport...she would have mentioned that.
Then I saw the date. Ah...the good ole days.
This thread is great. So entertaining! Please add me to your list. See I just saved money on entertainment. LOL
I started reading the thread and the 4th response said gas was $1.80. I was thinking, dang that’s cheap and it dawned on me this must be an old post. Sure would be nice if it was that cheap!
Oh my gosh you’re right, my bad for not checking the date. I didn’t realize this thread was so old.
Yes! Amy Dacyszyn (sp?) pronounced “decision”, has a great recipe for easy, chewy sourdough bread that used to cost about $0.25 per loaf three years ago. Her recommendations regarding dental hygiene have given me “cavity-free status” for the last four years, too.
