Fire Forces Evacuations, Burns Homes in Sylmar Area

Sayre Fire is near the 210 Freeway in Northern Los Angeles.

A dangerous, fast-moving brush fire in the Sylmar section of the San Fernando Valley, spread by gusting 50 mph winds has now burned at least five homes and is threatening several more, City Fire Department spokesperson Melissa Kelly said today.

So far there are no reports of injuries to residents or fire personnel, said Kelly.

The blaze ignited about 10:30 p.m. in the dry, brushy hills above 13000 W. Sayre Street near Shablow Ave, and has so far consumed more than 500 acres.

Looks like structure up in the Sleepy Hallow area of Carbon Canyon are now burning. Fire also just jumped Carbon Canyon road west of Olinda and almost caught a KCAL9 reporter. Still think the trailer park is okay.

I just had the dawgs outside...we have a much stronger “breeze”........yes, it’s just that. But there’s not been one for hours. So...I imagine right there BY the fires, there’d be major updrafts.

And THAT has to be one of the stupider posts on this whole thread......

:)

IT is Valencia Avenue in Brea, CA, it leads to Carbon Canyon Road and then you take Carbon Canyon to Chino Hills, this is the old Pre-57 FWY route over the hill, before that you had Carbon Canyon Road and Brea Canyon Road to Diamond Bar.

Our good friends who live in Yorba Linda are out here this weekend and they received a call a house two door down from them burned down. They are not up the hill, this was from blowing embers, said two in their neighborhood were taken out by embers.

Got called to work, our other on call comm guy is tied up at the Sylmar Fire. Fixed a MDT on an engine in Glendora. They're in for the night the engineer said. Ran into an old buddy, Capt Tenboe from Yucaipa. Now Chief Tenboe. Chief asked about my bear hunting.

Chief was there to glom the Patrol 86 (P86) Old Cheby service bed. Not sure where they were taking it. Some poor FF is going to be sleeping in that truck manning a radio on some dark ridge tonight.manning a radio. This was the old P86, not the newer Patrols we have. Chebys too if I remember right.

Lots of radio traffic tonight, the most I can remember in LA since I moved here in 1980. I asked many of the older FFs and they all said it's the worst in their careers. Not since 1961 Bel Air fire said county super Zev Zeraslavsky.

Fire is not laying down in many areas. Lots of crews rehabing at Hansen Dam and gettin ready for tomorrow. Some of our inmate camp crews went in at Carbon Canyon tonight near (Chino) to try and cut some lines there in the dark. Old boyscout ranch in there and Olinda trailer park. Lots of huge deer, rattlers and cougars live in there in those steep hills. Almost a wilderness in the middle of Los Angeles.

Tough work, even for them hard inmates who train like military with marches with heavy packs straight up mtns. "Morning Walks" they call them.

10-7 for some late supper.

It is a wilderness area for certain, lots of old, old structures up in there... and yes, lots of critters.

I don't remember the Bel Air fire back then being this spread out.

Tons of those things up there, I know! One rattler had babies in our neighbors garage when we lived there, the hill behind our house was nick-named rattlesnake hill. I hate snakes.

Just in 8,000 miles burnt.

Holy Moley yall 80 dry degrees in LA for the next week.

Oh a power line started the 2nd fire and now a 3rd fire all of its own???Crazy...and this does not include the first fire around Oprah and Friends area.

Carbon Canyon is gettin dangerous for the FF and nearby homes. Lots of fuel to burn up there.

Air is clear here in Redlands, slight breeze. Moon just past being full.

I wasn’t around in 1961 so I can’t comment on the Bel Air fire. This one appears to be the grand mac daddy of fires now. The old timers said Malibu was the last time for a firestorm like this.
