Page 103, Chapter "Peter Keating". Ellsworth Toohey is speaking to a crowd of striking workers while Peter Keating and Toohey's niece, Catherine, are listening to the loudspeaker outside the hall:
It was not a voice, it was a miracle. It unrolled as a velvet banner. It spoke English words, but the resonant clarity of each syllable made it sound like a new language spoken for the first time. It was the voice of a giant.
Keating stood, his mouth open. He did not hear what the voice was saying. He heard the beauty of the sounds without meaning. He felt no need to know the meaning: he could accept anything, he would b e led blindly anywhere.
"... and so, my friend", the voice was saying, "the lesson to be learned from our tragic struggle is the lesson of unity. We shall unite or we shall be defeated. Our will -- the will of the disinherited, the forgotten, the oppressed -- shall weld us into a solid bulwark, with a common faith and a common goal. This is the time for every man to renounce the thoughts of his petty little problems, of gain, of comfort, of self-gratification. This is the time to merge his self in a great current, in the rising tide which is approaching to sweep us all, willing or unwilling, into the future. History, my friends, does not ask questions or acquiescence. It is irrevocable, as the voice of the masses that determine it. Let us listen to the call. Let us organize, my brothers, Let us organize. Let us organize. Let us organize."
Do not be daunted by its size, it's a good read.
Who is John Galt?
The "money is the root of all evil" quote is one of most mis-quoted quotes of all time. It ranks up there with the "separation of Church and State in the Constitution" fraud.
The actual Scriptural reference is 1 Timothy 6:10: "For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows."
(Fixed it for you)
The Fountainhead was a great movie.
Fear is the real root of all evil. Trace it back, and you will find that every evil act in history was committed out of some fear or another the actor couldn’t overcome.
John Galt is paying me $250,000 for each sonnet I write but do not publish.
Is the movie (Fountainhead) a good introduction for young people? I’ve read the book, but never seen the movie....just wondering if it’s worth buying for $9.59?
I have both, it’s intense reading. Not for the timid. Lent them out never saw them again....I hate that!
So as a matter of fact I JUST re-ordered both of them from Amazon. They arrived yesterday. Winter reading in front of the fire place you know.
It’s been 20 years since I saw it, definitely worth 10 bucks.
Many can read, but not all understand.
Yep, you got it right. I often have to expain that one to people. Like you said...It’s the LOVE....some will never get it.
It has come pretty close. Here is some current scuttlebutt from Wikipedia.
The film is currently in active development by Baldwin Entertainment Group and Lions Gate Entertainment. A two-part draft screenplay written by James V. Hart was developed into a 127-page screenplay by writer-director Randall Wallace.Angelina Jolie has been confirmed to play the role of Dagny Taggart, and there are discussions with Russell Crowe to play the part of Hank Rearden. Brad Pitt is rumored to be cast in a yet unspecified role. Both Jolie and Pitt are fans of Rand's works. The role of the mysterious John Galt is likely to be played by an unknown. Vadim Perelman (House of Sand and Fog) had been confirmed to direct, but as of June 18, 2008 is no longer attached to the project. Lions Gate Entertainment picked up worldwide distribution rights. The film was expected to be released in 2009.
Jolie's 2008 pregnancy and Perelman's departure has cast the project into doubt. As of September 2008[update], the Internet Movie Database lists the film's development status as "unknown".
I must aay that Pitt fits my impression of Ragnar Danneskjöld - The Pirate.
Me too.
In addition, I have been using it as my nom de plume in comments to online news articles and editorials in my local paper.
You should see the hateful comments I get.
“Im ashamed to admit that I havent read it yet yet!”
I read it last year for the first time. It is a wonderful read aside from being politically enlightening. It is everything you have heard and then some. It is hard to believe English was not her first language. Start now. You won’t regret it!
Of course Pitt would play John Galt because Ragnar didn’t have a torrid affair with Dagny.
Thanks.
Good thread. I find this statement to be relevant lately.
“The spread of evil is the symptom of a vacuum. Whenever evil wins, it is only by default: by the moral failure of those who evade the fact that there can be no compromise on basic principles.”
(’Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal’ 1966)
Thanks.
Atlas Shrugged is being made into a movie... but slowly.
