AP: Palinmania may stop Romney from running in 2012
Eh. If theres any truth to it, Id say Ambinder is a lot closer to the real reason than the AP is.
The surprising ascendancy of McCains eventual pick, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, and her popularity among some GOP conservatives have left Romney wondering whether he could wage a viable second campaign for the White House, according to friends and advisers
While (Palin) may not be popular with the winning majority that Barack Obama put together, shes enormously popular with the losing minority that John McCain put together and that pretty closely mirrors Republican primary voters, said Rich Bond, former chairman of the Republican National Committee.
Charley Manning, a Massachusetts Republican operative who has worked as a Romney adviser, recently told a local radio interviewer: Id be surprised if Mitt ever ran again for president. I sure dont think it was the best experience of his life.
Taking on the Cuda is a fools errand only if two things occur: (1) the economy recovers, leaving Mitt without an obvious argument for why the base should prefer him to her, and (2) Huckabee doesnt run, thereby ceding social cons to Palin. Number one is obviously more important than number two since a sustained crisis would give the GOP a shot at the White House; absent that, Im not sure why any Republican would want to run in 2012, especially a guy like Mitt who had to eat a ton of campaign debt this year and would probably end up on the hook for a ton more trying to take down The Ones money machine.
For a guy whos supposedly sour on the idea, though, he sure seems to be making the right moves:

1) Bond needs to go. Palin didn’t put together the losing minority vote, your loser of a candidate John McCain did. She just stopped it from being a landslide.
2) Romney has NO chance at the socons or Huckabee never would have come out to place second in the primaries. keep dreaming Romney-ites. Nor does Huck stand a chance at them now with palin in the race.
3) If the economy is still bad in 2012, and it may well be, Romney’s background is hardly a qualifier. Furthermore that would mean it would be a “change” election and doesn’t matter if the candidate as a degree on the subject. Look at Obama as proof. So if the voters want change in ‘12, I’d rather change be the conservative woman with good instincts then the RINO with friends like Kathleen Parker.
4) If Republican voters choose another loser RINO, they deserve to lose. That means Romney, Huck, Crist, Pawlenty and Daniels.
What are you thinking? She has more than enough “poise, ability to communicate, and ‘people skills’ “ right now. She also has a solid and genuine conservative agenda, based on heartfelt conservative principles.
I’ll give you the benfit of doubt you are sincere, despite your sign up date and the talking points.
Here is the fact. Over a week after the election people are still talking about her, maybe more then Obama himself with 60% of Republican voters wanting her to run after having raised millions of dollars and drawn tens of thousands in crowds and still lifting ratings wherever she goes.
That, to quote McCain, My friend...makes her a serious contender. More so then ANYONE out there.
her reputation hasn’t been dented at all among those that matter. McCain was well liked by moderates and they turned their backs on him. If you think that wins elections, you couldn’t be more wrong.
And as for the press, name the last time they didn’t attack a Republican. McCain was a favorite of theirs and they still unleashed the fangs.
Yes, she has enough right now. But imagine her super-powered on issues, ability to quickly play around the media potholes, and stronger than before? I’m dreaming of the 2012 model, and I like what I see.
Close the Republican primaries. Otherwise, the party’s over.
You mean at the top of the ticket. I’d call Cheney a conservative. As for top of ticket, you have to go back 6 elections to 1984.
Romney has already said that another run for the Presidency is unlikely.

What do you mean, close the GOP primaries? I don’t know what that means.
If he was Luthern- Catholic- whatever-he would garner more votes.

Ah, no...
he would have got less...
For a start he would not have got 90+% of the votes in UT...
He would not have had the mormon money machine behind him...
Make the Republican primaries for Republicans only. Otherwise, Republicans will always nominate squishy candidates.
Thanks I did not know this. Is there any truth to the rumors of it being Romney’s staff attacking Palin? Or is it somehow the liberals? It has to be, logically
Gotcha. If that occurs it won’t be a very large field, and this year Duncan Hunter would have beat back Thompson in a right race.
Are freepers seriously suggesting Palin would be ready to run for president in 2010? Is that what this is about?
I remember when Fred Thompson was supposed to be our secret weapon September 2007. That worked out real well, we got McCain.
I am not sure about Romney but he would have done better than McCain, he would not have soiled his pants over the financial crisis like McCain did.
I will wait and see who is best to win. I like Jindal as well.
It means only registed Republicans can vote in republican primaries. No cross over voting from Dummies or other third parties.
I'm just not sure that the conservative movement can continue to work within the Republican establishment.
I should have known that. Thanks.
Jindal/Palin 2012 has a nice ring to it.
Jindal will have far more experience than the community organizer did.
