Something of historic proportions is happening
Atlas Shrugs | A reader comment over at Dollard's place

Posted on 11/14/2008 6:32:48 AM PST by freedom9

"I am a student of history. Professionally. I have written 15 books in six languages, and have studied it all my life. I think there is something monumentally large afoot, and I do not believe it is just a banking crisis, or a mortgage crisis, or a credit crisis. Yes these exist, but they are merely single facets on a very large gemstone that is only now coming into a sharper focus.

Something of historic proportions is happening. I can sense it because I know how it feels, smells, what it looks like, and how people react to it. Yes, a perfect storm may be brewing, but there is something happening within our country that has been evolving for about ten - fifteen years. The pace has dramatically quickened in the past two.

We demand and then codify into law the requirement that our banks make massive loans to people we know they can never pay back? Why?

We learn just days ago that the Federal Reserve, which has little or no real oversight by anyone, has “loaned” two trillion dollars (that is $2,000,000,000,000) over the past few months, but will not tell us to whom or why or disclose the terms. That is our money. Yours and mine. And that is three times the 700B we all argued about so strenuously just this past September. Who has this money? Why do they have it? Why are the terms unavailable to us? Who asked for it? Who authorized it? I thought this was a government of “we the people,” who loaned our powers to our elected leaders. Apparently not.

We have spent two or more decades intentionally de-industrializing our economy. Why?

We have intentionally dumbed down our schools, ignored our history, and no longer teach our founding documents, why we are exceptional, and why we are worth preserving. Students by and large cannot write, think critically, read, or articulate. Parents are not revolting, teachers are not picketing, school boards continue to back mediocrity. Why?

We have now established the precedent of protesting every close election (now violently in California over a proposition that is so controversial that it wants marriage to remain between one man and one woman. Did you ever think such a thing possible just a decade ago?). We have corrupted our sacred political process by allowing unelected judges to write laws that radically change our way of life, and then mainstream Marxist groups like ACORN and others to turn our voting system into a banana republic. To what purpose?

Now our mortgage industry is collapsing, housing prices are in free fall, major industries are failing, our banking system is on the verge of collapse, social security is nearly bankrupt, as is medicare and our entire government, our education system is worse than a joke (I teach college and know precisely what I am talking about)–the list is staggering in its length, breadth, and depth. It is potentially 1929 x ten. And we are at war with an enemy we cannot name for fear of offending people of the same religion, who cannot wait to slit the throats of your children if they have the opportunity to do so.

And now we have elected a man no one knows anything about, who has never run so much as a Dairy Queen, let alone a town as big as Wasilla, Alaska. All of his associations and alliances are with real radicals in their chosen fields of employment, and everything we learn about him, drip by drip, is unsettling if not downright scary (Surely you have heard him speak about his idea to create and fund a mandatory civilian defense force stronger than our military for use inside our borders? No? Oh of course. The media would never play that for you over and over and then demand he answer it. Sarah Palin’s pregnant daughter and $150,000 wardrobe is more imporant.)

Mr. Obama’s winning platform can be boiled down to one word: change.

Why?

I have never been so afraid for my country and for my children as I am now.

This man campaigned on bringing people together, something he has never, ever done in his professional life. In my assessment, Obama will divide us along philosophical lines, push us apart, and then try to realign the pieces into a new and different power structure. Change is indeed coming. And when it comes, you will never see the same nation again.

And that is only the beginning.

And I thought I would never be able to experience what the ordinary, moral German felt in the mid-1930s. In those times, the savior was a former smooth-talking rabble-rouser from the streets, about whom the average German knew next to nothing. What they did know was that he was associated with groups that shouted, shoved, and pushed around people with whom they disagreed; he edged his way onto the political stage through great oratory and promises. Economic times were tough, people were losing jobs, and he was a great speaker. And he smiled and waved a lot. And people, even newspapers, were afraid to speak out for fear that his “brown shirts” would bully them into submission. And then, he was duly elected to office, a full-throttled economic crisis at hand [the Great Depression]. Slowly but surely he seized the controls of government power, department by department, person by person, bureaucracy by bureaucracy. The kids joined a Youth Movement in his name, where they were taught what to think. How did he get the people on his side? He did it promising jobs to the jobless, money to the moneyless, and goodies for the military-industrial complex. He did it by indoctrinating the children, advocating gun control, health care for all, better wages, better jobs, and promising to re-instill pride once again in the country, across Europe, and across the world.

He did it with a compliant media–did you know that? And he did this all in the name of justice and . . . change. And the people surely got what they voted for.

(Look it up if you think I am exaggerating.)

Read your history books. Many people objected in 1933 and were shouted down, called names, laughed at, and made fun of. When Winston Churchill pointed out the obvious in the late 1930s while seated in the House of Lords in England (he was not yet Prime Minister), he was booed into his seat and called a crazy troublemaker. He was right, though.

Don’t forget that Germany was the most educated, cultured country in Europe. It was full of music, art, museums, hospitals, laboratories, and universities. And in less than six years–a shorter time span than just two terms of the U. S. presidency–it was rounding up its own citizens, killing others, abrogating its laws, turning children against parents, and neighbors against neighbors. All with the best of intentions, of course. The road to Hell is paved with them.

As a practical thinker, one not overly prone to emotional decisions, I have a choice: I can either believe what the objective pieces of evidence tell me (even if they make me cringe with disgust); I can believe what history is shouting to me from across the chasm of seven decades; or I can hope I am wrong by closing my eyes, having another latte, and ignoring what is transpiring around me.

Some people scoff at me, others laugh, or think I am foolish, naive, or both. Perhaps I am. But I have never been afraid to look people in the eye and tell them exactly what I believe–and why I believe it.

I pray I am wrong. I do not think I am."

Just before the election, I sent that poem to several of my closest friends - the ones who I thought would “get it.”

Yes, but BO is going to deny us using coal (it pollutes), deny us drilling in Gulf (too risky enviornmentally), and deny us the ability to fix this without government control (too Capitalistic).

The reason he and his friends will not allow us to be Americans and deal with this, is that they intend to uterly destroy us and bring us under an international government controlled by the Commies and the Muzzies.

They hate free people that bad. They are aiming directly at the Christians in the West and the rest of the World.

Do Not Be Deceived.

They hate US.

Good God, is this for REAL??? Could you link the source, please? If this is true, we’re deep, deep trouble — once people start wearing them (God forbid!)

I suspect it’s loans to other countries. I haven’t heard congress say anything about it though, so maybe congress is in the know?

Ths Saudis are a factor. We have enough hydrate or frozne nat gas for 100 million American homes for the next decade. We have 4 times the Saudis oil reserves in the lower 48.

Al Gore cares nothing about the environment. This election was to keep us energy serfs forever. Green Energy - it will take decades or more. We are serfs. It is all about control. We have so many natural resources but the Dems will try to bankrupt us an dthe middle class for Control. See Chavez and Venezuela. Our “election” was a textbook of Chavez grabbing power.

Do something and help Leo by sending letters to SCOTUS to insure his case is heard and not blocked by clerks at SCOTUS. See the comments section for a sample letter, the address for Justices and docket number. (See below)

I don’t see that many paralells with Post WWI Germany. The analogy just doesn’t hang together.

Maybe not, but Obama's plans for a massive Civilian Security Force is very troubling.

Many people held Bush in disdain because they felt he ignored the constitutional rights of a few hundred terrorists. I fear we may have a person in power who will ignore those right for millions.

I agree. History is our teacher. Look at Rome...why did Emperors place their image on coins? We now see collectors coins coming out with Obama’s image on them. Why did Rome have the Praetorian Guard? They were there to protect the Emperor. We now see Obama wanting a civilian army. Why did Hitler want control over the youth.....see Obama here? The list goes on and on but half of our people seem to want to ingnore history. Either that or they weren’t taught history in school.

That explanation makes sense.

It’s also a good way to approach the commercial paper market. The businesses get the loans they need. The banks can sit on their hands and forego profits until they decide the reward justifies the risk. Once the banks start loaning again, the fed eases out.

You're right.

This is all beyond rational. Our rational minds are either in a serious state of ignorance, like those who are in major disasters and cannot comprehend the enormity of the situation because it goes against all their experiential knowledge, or denial because of the “this can't be happening to me” fear, both of which are a varied willful blindness, possibly for self-preservation.

Or, is this a case of spiritual blindness?

Is this a case where a very large mass of people are really able to be deceived by what should be plain and obvious and a clear warning? Are large portions of our leadership actually getting away with a huge deception right under our noses? Is this Nation and our Constitution actually being subverted in plain view of every intelligent citizen and nobody is calling it what it is? Can it really be? And if so, how can so many be so blind, other than a spiritual blindness that transcends ignorance, or self-preservational willful denial?

Yet here we are.

So many smart people, but so very few are saying what really appears to be plainly happening.

But to see it all laid out so clearly, we are much too blind for this level of denial. We are the most free nation on earth, yet we are unable to boldly declare the coming bondage what it is, much less prevent it.

It seems far beyond a mere collective synaptic lapse, or mass hysterical blindness to the obvious.
It appears to be a spiritual blindness. Almost as if the masses are deceived. The kind of deception that allows and encourages evil to flourish.

It isn't my intent to hijack this thread with my comment, but I would like to close with how Christ answered when He was asked; "...what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?"

Before all the descriptive details, He first gave an important warning..."Watch out that no one deceives you."

in my heart, I think the coming deception is near, if not even at the very door.

We live in terrible evil times and the sins we have committed in the name of CHOICE is rapidly coming to a sever punishment and testing. The Lord is no longer around the corner, as some say, but, He is just a few steps away from coming. We prayed and fasted for a miracle this election for McPal because deep in our hearts we FEARED the consequences of an OBAMATION and what it would do to our nation and children. Yet the Lord answered with a resounding “NO.” The sins of this nation and the cries of the innocent blood spilled for the sake of vanity and pleasures are coming quickly to judgment. My prayer was simple and to the point....Lord grant us the leader we need, not the leader we DESERVE! He picked the latter. The GOOD NEWS is GOD is still in control and still working on our behalf of those WHO LOVE and turly TRUST HIM no matter what terrible things will befall our country. I had been rebuked by some here telling me there is “NO GOD or that “GOD DOES NOT EXIST”...well I’ve got news for you...I will not be MOVED from the Love of my FATHER, my Jesus and the Holy Spirit, because they hold my life and my children’s future in His hands. Though I walk in the valley of the shadow of death I will fear NO evil for thy are with me. He comforts me. You see He will be my source of strength when the crap hits the fan in our beloved nation. I have peace knowing I serve an AWESOME God everything is subject under his authority. Someday when I see him face to face He’ll explain EVERYTHING to me, past, present and future. So cheer up...GOD IS STILL ALIVE AND SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF THE FATHER! He is our PRESIDENT FOREVER in our nation called HEAVEN....HALLELUJAH!! Let the evil ones rejoice and celebrate in the spoils of their victory for now, for their days have been numbered. Peace be with you all and don’t let satan rob you of your joy! BLESSINGS!

I must say, I go back and forth between being able to be sarcastic and snide and sometimes even lighthearted about the outcome of the election, and being profoundly troubled by what I see happening and the future implications. And I’ll be the first to confess as to a propensity for worry. Snide as I normally am, this isn’t just “my guy won, your guy lost”, there are just too many parallels (referred to in post #1) for me to feel comfortable in complacency.

Change in the weather, change in the weather,
Somethin's happenin' here.
Change in the weather, change in the weather,
People walkin' round in fear.

Uh huh, you better duck and run,
Get under cover 'cause the change has come.
Storm warning, and it looks like rain,
Be nothin' left after the hurricance.
This here's a jungle, ain't no lie,
Look at the people, terror in their eyes.
Bad business comin', can't be denied,
They're running with the dogs, afraid to die.

Change in the weather, change in the weather,
Somethin's happenin' here.
Change in the weather, change in the weather,
People walkin' round in fear.

Uh huh, you best believe it's true,
The levee's busted, badness comin' through.
Oh no, there ain't no place to hide,
Reach out and pluck you, take you for a ride.
Sea of frustration, take everything in sight,
Won't be no blessing if we make it through the night.
Down on your knees, go ahead and pray,
But every demon has to have his day.

Change in the weather, change in the weather,
Somethin's happenin' here.
Change in the weather, change in the weather,
People walkin' round in fear.

Well! Oh, God!

High noon, I can't believe my eyes,
Wind is ragin', there's a fire in the sky.
Ground shakin', everything comin' loose,
Run like a coward but it ain't no use.
Edge of the river, it's an ugly scene,
People gettin' pushed, people gettin' mean.
The change is comin' and it's gettin' late,
Ain't no survivin', and there ain't no escape.
