SC priest: No communion for Obama supporters

COLUMBIA, S.C. – A South Carolina Roman Catholic priest has told his parishioners that they should refrain from receiving Holy Communion if they voted for Barack Obama because the Democratic president-elect supports abortion, and supporting him "constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil."

The Rev. Jay Scott Newman said in a letter distributed Sunday to parishioners at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greenville that they are putting their souls at risk if they take Holy Communion before doing penance for their vote.

"Our nation has chosen for its chief executive the most radical pro-abortion politician ever to serve in the United States Senate or to run for president," Newman wrote, referring to Obama by his full name, including his middle name of Hussein.

Check out the uproar over at DU. They want to pull their tax exempt status. Of course, they never say that about churches like Rev. Wright’s.

DUmmy’s is right.

They don’t get the Constitution. They don’t get what the Catholic church is all about.

I suppose that that’s a look at our future with BO in the picture.

every priest and every Rev should be doing this.
My mother in law is in MA and totally ignorant to politics but votes for anything with a D.

I would love to see Kennedy’s, delahunts, franks priest say get out you are not what we stand for.

Infact why the people does not instruct catholic priests is beyond me..
All of New England should be conservative if most of the religious folk there actually wasn’t ignorant to politics

Praise the Lord. A priest with guts. Now why can’t we hear something like this from His Holiness.

The churches should have been telling their parishioners and congregants this BEFORE the election. They would not have had to mention any candidates by name (thereby jeopardizing their tax-exempt status) but just saying if they considered themselves Christians, they could not vote for any candidate who was pro-abortion; especially late-term and for infanticide after a botched abortion attempt.

This pope, in his quiet way, has set the stage for all the bishops and priests who have been speaking out. If you don’t understand this, you don’t know him at all.

Good for him. Pastors of all Christian churches should be exercising this type of church discipline.

This is exactly the kind of message people need to hear - not the standard omission of any political subject matter or a defeatist “oh well, give it up, he’s our President, let’s support him”.

I’d consider my local church to be fairly conservative, but I’ve seen nothing like this. Bravo!
