The number of U.S. workers filing new claims for jobless benefits rose last week to 516,000, the highest level since the weeks following the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, the Labor Department reported on Thursday.
The figure outstripped forecasts, with analysts polled by Reuters expecting initial claims to be only 484,000. The claims were last at this high a level in the week ended Sept. 29, 2001, when they were 517,000.

O baby lets double that with more tax hikes, come on congress your slacking.
We're having fun already, and the 0bama lama ding dong hasn't even been crowned yet.
The last time Democrats hosed the housing market, tried to fix the inequities of renting, we got the S&L crisis, remember that? Maybe there are just two classes, those that rent and those that own and nature decreed it that way. I think we should allow only home owners to vote in the future.
I disagree.
We are a mobile world and alot of people move around frequently. It might be more financially solvent for them to rent for a while and then you will be denying them the vote.
I think there should be some sort of criteria to vote, but I’m not sure what that should be.
In response to the high level of jobless claims, congress should:
a.) Increase jobless claim benefits;
b.) Extend the time to claim jobless benefits;
c.) Change fundamental policies to create more private sector jobs;
d.) Both A and C
If you answered c, you are not ready to join congress. If you answered a or b, you are half way there. If you answered d, please see you local democratic party leader to run for congress.
With Obama as my ruler I shall not want
He maketh me a servant of the state
He leadeth me beside untapped oil reserves.
He restoreth the fairness doctrine
He leadeth me down the path of communism in Marxist style
Yea though I walk through the valley of inflation and debt
I shall fear no lay offs
My union Reps. will comfort me
He preparest a table in the presence of the evil corporations and rich tax payers
He taketh their money to make My cup runneth over
Surely universal health care and government run retirement funds will follow me
And I will dwell in a state owned house Forever.
No skin in the game, no stake in the outcome — results in just voting for the highest pay-off. Maybe we can put the next election on ebay.
It would be easy to set an 18 month time frame to buy another house, or you lose your voting privilege. Same as the capital gains tax on residence sale.
As I said, I disagree.
I do not believe it, I don’t believe the tumble in the stock market either or the increased fighting in the middle east.
Barry the Marxist is president and he said he would fix all this, so these stories must be from the onion.
If you want to allow every low life to vote, the outcome will be the same every time. The Democrats will bus the illegals, winos and gutter dwellers to the polls. Maybe we should just play the game and raise our ante, maybe we should promise beach houses and a Mercedes to everyone who votes for a Republican. Get our community agitprops in gear and help the little people vote for Republicans.
Good.
I said... that I do think there should be a criteria to vote.
Just not YOUR criteria of home ownership.
Sorry.
I have in-laws that have never turned in a 1040 in their lives. Their politics is limited to "who has the best bennies for me". It's never "who will have a strong military", who will strengthen business, who will protect the 2nd Amendment, who will put the right judges on the SCOTUS, etc. Just offer another program, or raise SSI, or whatever and you get their vote.
I think that is a FINE criteria.
Yes, paying taxes can happen even for folks who do not own property.
Re: How about proving you are a taxpayer.
That clearly goes against the intent of the Founding Fathers.
