Young retains US House seat in Alaska

By MARY PEMBERTON – 1 hour ago

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — After the toughest fight of his long political career, Alaska voters have returned Republican incumbent Don Young to the U.S. House for his 19th term.

Young, 75, defied pre-election pundits by surviving a strong challenge from Democrat Ethan Berkowitz. Young was returned to office despite being under investigation and linked to an ongoing corruption scandal.

The Associated Press declared Young the winner Wednesday, with Young getting 50 percent of the vote compared with Berkowitz's 45 percent.

I think this is what’s known as a lose-lose situation. Win you get a dirty bloated-government hack intent on destroying the Republican Party, lose you get a leftist Democrat.

Did come within 300 votes of knocking him out in the primary. We’ll probably get him next time.

Well... David Berkowitz is too busy witnessing for Christ to fellow prisoners and God bless him.

And Colin Powell testified in the Stevens trial. Swore to the man’s integrity and honor.

So much for Colin Powell’s judgement.

*Bingo* we have a winner! I was wondering if anyone would be aware of the conversion of 'Son of Sam' to 'Son of Hope', my invoking his name was more a commentary on the 'Rats predilection for criminal types, if they (Democrats) realized David Berkowitz was now a spirit filled Christian and a model prisoner who said that he would REFUSE parole if it were offered due to the nature of his crimes, they would be in favor of the death penalty being applied to him retroactively.

If David Berkowitz were one day released, I would have no hesitation whatsoever in welcoming him to my home and having fellowship with him.

Thanks for your response.

CNBC is reporting that Stevens has fallen behind as the counting continues for the Senate seat and Franken and the Democrat machine is getting closer to stealing the election from Coleman in Minnesota. Those two seats would give the Democrats and their caucus allies 59 seats in the Senate. The House is already so heavily democratic that Young's victory doesn't really help.

And when he starts talking to your dog and following it’s instructions, you’ll sleep soundly at night.......

If I had a dime for every jailhouse conversion I’d be able to bail out the country

What happens after this dope gets his sentence? Does he govern from the penitentiary? Does he play drop the soap with Duke Cunningham?

WTF. Is this the best illustration of how freaking bankrupt the GOP is or what!

The House will vote to expel him.

At least now they can appoint a decent Republican to replace him when he is sentenced.

Speaking of which, how goes the Franken recount? Has Big Al cherry picked enough votes to get him into the Senate yet? Last I heard he was at a couple of hundred, which is way down from the 750+ deficit at the end of voting on the 4th. With RATs in the count and RATs doing oversight (laughable in itself) it's only a matter of time until the not-so-funnyman will get the role of his life. I'll bet he develops a schtick for the Senate floor.

I was unaware of his conversion to Christ. I was a NY resident when the "Son of Sam" incidents occurred. Wow.

In case anyone else was wondering, here's the relevant excerpt from Wikipedia:

In 1987, Berkowitz became a born again Christian in prison. According to his personal testimony, his moment of conversion occurred after reading Psalm 34:6 from a Gideon's Pocket Testament Bible given to him by a fellow inmate. In the same testimony, he stated that his obsession with and heavy involvement in the occult played a major role in the Son of Sam murders.

In March 2002, Berkowitz sent a letter to New York Governor George Pataki asking that his parole hearing be canceled, stating: "In all honesty, I believe that I deserve to be in prison for the rest of my life. I have, with God's help, long ago come to terms with my situation and I have accepted my punishment." In June 2004, he was denied a second parole hearing after he stated that he did not want one. The parole board saw that he had a good record in the prison programs, but decided that the brutality of his crimes called for him to stay imprisoned. In July 2006, the board once again denied parole on similar grounds, with Berkowitz not in attendance at the hearing. He is very involved in prison ministry and regularly counsels troubled inmates.

In June 2005, Berkowitz sued his former attorney, Hugo Harmatz, claiming he had taken possession of Berkowitz's letters and other personal belongings in order to publish a book of his own. Berkowitz stated that he would only drop the lawsuit if the attorney signed over all money he makes to the victims' families. On October 25, 2006, Berkowitz and Harmatz settled out of court, with Harmatz agreeing to return the disputed items to Berkowitz's present attorney Mark Jay Heller, and to donate part of his book profits to the New York State Crime Victims Board.

Shortly before her death in 2006, Stacy Moskowitz's mother wrote Berkowitz a letter saying she had forgiven him for his crimes. Moskowitz lived her final days in a Miami co-op, surrounded by pictures of her daughters, whom she talked about constantly. "She said she did forgive everyone," Denaro said. "She needed to relieve herself of anger to be able to move forward with her life. She would say things like, 'This kind of anger can make you sick. Don't let anger eat you up'."

Berkowitz is housed in Sullivan Correctional Facility in Fallsburg, New York. His "official" website is maintained on his behalf by a church group as he is not allowed access to a computer.

Berkowitz plans on writing a memoir, entitled Son of Hope: The Prison Journals of David Berkowitz, which will be published through Morning Star Communications. Berkowitz himself will receive no money from publication, and a portion of the proceeds will go to the New York state crime victims board for distribution to the victims of his crimes.

Not in Alaska. After the previous Governor appointed his daughter, the law now requires a special election.

Young is now 800 votes behind, with somethin’ like 40,000 more votes yet to be counted.

Indeed he is. I am overjoyed at the way God saved him and set him free from his former murderous life. God is good.

Amen. Me, too. The one thing that I noticed about him is that his whole countenance changed when he was saved and set free. Wonderful story.
