Catholic Church Battling Obama On Abortion Issue

Fresh off of his election victory, President-elect Barack Obama is already facing a fight from another opponent – the Catholic Church – on the issue of abortion.

"Anytime someone like him, someone with his position [on abortion] is elected to a major office, it increases the difficulty for us," Ed Mechmann, of the NY Archdiocese, said.

Mechmann says that at their annual meeting this week, the nation's Catholic bishops are discussing how to tackle Obama's support of the Freedom of Choice Act.

That act, which currently stands before Congress, seeks to overturn the 2003 legislation signed by President Bush that bans late-term abortions in some cases.

"I would expect legislative advocacy campaigns and postcard campaigns, e-mails, writing letters, encouraging people to meet with their local legislators," Mechmann said.

Geez, I could have sworn Obama's website said he was "pro-life". Maybe he just meant the poor saps that are on death row deserve to live.

Catholics, LDS, many Baptists and Evangelicals, and others, all fighting the good fight on this.

God grant that we may yet prevail, despite this set-back.

Many more designs here.

Here’s a thought, your Holinesses. Rather than “battle” an elected official who never pretended to be anything other than pro-abortion, persuade instead the voters who elected him. Many of them are among your own congregants.

They tried this time, actually. They sent out many notices on the evils of supporting abortion supporters.

They cannot name names, or they risk losing their tax exempt status. Only churches full of black liberals and marxist P’sOS can praise candidates by name.

If the Catholic church cannot convince it's own parishioners, how do they expect to convince someone who is not one?

Your Holiness, clean your house. That house will, in turn, clean the government with it's VOTE.

Please forgive me. I didn't know this. The bishops only need to tell the truth IMHO. It is up to their hearers to decide what to do with that truth.

Someday ,very soon, there’s going to be a modern day Thomas More who is going to be dispatched by the coming socialist/secularist regime.

My aughter and her family live in NY. My oldest grandson is about 15 and his public school spent a lot of time on the eelction. Most of the kids were for Obama, but he studied all the issues, watched all the debates and came out for McCain for his experience and service. I asked my daughter about McCains pro life views vs. Obama’s pro death views (what I considered the most important issue). Her answer: “We didn’t hear anything about that in NY. The only information that I got about that were some emails from you.”

This family is Catholic and attends their parish church weekly + Cathechism classes. This is a sad state of affairs.

This nation was tested on Nov. 4, and we failed.

And a lot of protestants voted for him too! Let’s not forget that! Quit blaming Obama on the Catholics!

IMHO the American Bishops’ treatise on “Faithful Citizenship” caused more problems than it solved. The 8 weeks of lengthy letters seemed to equate abortion with global warming and littering.

Most of us need straight talk. (I’m not confused, but apparently a lot of other Catholics are, including our new VP.)

I will march with him, whomever he may be. “I die the King’s good servant, but God’s first.”

The 36th Annual March For Life will take place on Thursday, January 22,2009 at noon on the Mall. It will be just two days after O takes over. I think this march will be one of the biggest.

It is up to their hearers to decide what to do with that truth.

The seamless garment argument has been terribly misused. People have gotten woefully confused.

Add to it the statement that one should listen to one's conscience, without the clause a 'formed' conscience, well... there's all sorts of wiggle room, sadly.

Didn't over 70% of the Catholics support Obama? Why didn't the Vatican speak out against Obama before he was elected? He has never denied he was PRO ABORTION, were these people actually mesmerized, on drugs or did they all of a sudden get a huge dose of reality? Good Heavens!
