Obama health plan to cost $75 billion: analysis

President-elect Barack Obama's plans to overhaul the U.S. health care system would cost the federal government $75 billion but would provide health insurance for 95 percent of Americans, consulting firm PriceWaterhouseCoopers said on Wednesday.

This works out to about $2,500 per newly insured person, the firm said in a report.

"The plan would increase to $1 trillion cumulatively by 2018 or approximately $130 billion per year," the report said.

While the plan would extend health insurance to two-thirds of the 47 million people who currently lack it, the overhaul may worsen some problems, such as a shortage of primary care doctors, the analysis found.

"Unless costs are cut, growing health care costs will increase the costs of Obama's plan dramatically over time and reduce the effectiveness of mandates. This could make the federal costs unsustainably high," the report read.

"Because of the deficit and financial crisis, there's unlikely to be any new federal money available, so health reform may require reallocation of dollars already in the health system."

But some of the money could be recovered from payouts made to hospitals that care for the uninsured, the analysis found. It found that $25 billion, or about a third of the cost of Obama's plan, could come from existing payments to hospitals for uncompensated care.

"Obama's proposal is likely to increase revenues but lower margins for providers, pharmaceutical companies and health plans that increasingly depend on government payment," the report read.

Some people have suggested that dealing with the global financial crisis outweighed the need for immediate health care reform, but PriceWaterhouseCoopers said they were not mutually exclusive. For instance, health reforms could spark new mergers and acquisitions, it said.

What was it Lyndon Johnson said about the costs of his Great Society program?

One of the problems (because there are many) with just adopting universal health is that it does nothing to address the cost. If costs keep increasing, it will just take a bigger share of government expenditures and cause us to go further into debt. And since we already have over $50 trillion in unfunded liabilities, I don’t see any way this can be sustained (not that I think it should to begin with).

Not to worry......he’ll just raise your taxes to pay for it. He should be talking to the insurance companies to lower their rates.

$2,500 per newly insured person would pay for about 1 MRI scan for each person.

That’s it.

And they want us to believe that this amount would cover everyone for everything?

Sure. Only $75 Billion. The reality is that the cost will be more like $75 Trillion.

Government failed at Social Security. Government failed at Medicare. Government failed at public education. Government fails at practically everything. Hell, because it was so preoccupied with social engineering, Government even failed to protect U.S. citizens and permanent residents from the terrorists on September 11.

And yet the electorate keeps re-electing the same buffoons who keep reheating and dishing up the same mouldy Socialist crap. Either the electorate is stupid beyond belief or high on the mould...or both.

$75 Billion for the Healthcare plan.

Does that include enough money for the increase in number of doctors to take care of the increase in patients; does that $75 Billion include enough for the increase in number of facilities (hospitals; clinics; ambulances, etc., etc.)? If not where does that money come from?

Amazing what some of people come up with. Government-provided health care will increase free-ridding, which means that a greater number of people to be insured on the public-dole. Which means that health care cost will go through the roof, resulting in higher taxes.

I thought it was estimated to cost more like 2 tril the first year and a couple hundred billion every year after. I dont have insurance, I havent had steady insurance for ten years since I got out of the army, so I understand there are alot of people that need insurance that dont have it. But its affordable, granted Ive never had any health problems, so Ive been really lucky.

....there’s unlikely to be any new federal money available, so health reform may require reallocation of dollars already in the health system.
::::::::
And this translates to....we destroy health care benefits and quality as they exist so that we can put more dregs and bums under government control and welfare.....

And who said, “Obama is not a socialist?”

So....$75B covers 95% of us? Huh? What percentage IS INSURED NOW, versus how many he wants to ADD? Will it BRING TOTAL INSURED PEOPLE UP to 95%?

Misleading headline. You need to read closer to see it's $75 billion in the first year, and escalates thereafter (not accounting for inflation or for the synergistic costs of other government health care programs like Medicaid). BOHICA.

Those numbers are wrong!

350,000,000 million people x 95% = 332,500,000 million people to insure.

$75,000,000,000 billion / 332,500,000 million people to insure = $225.56 per person.

$225 bucks per person per year for insurance!!! LOL!!! OBAMA THE FRAUD! I guess community organizers don't do math!

Or greater debt and with that comes higher interest on the same. Ultimately it will either have to be printed or taxed though.

We can provide a fixed resource to more people (increase demand) without changing the supply and the cost will go .... down? We've repealed the law of supply and demand?

No wait... that's not it... it will go down because the government will "renegotiate" prices for the services it buys. Well where I went to school it's a seller who "renegotiates" a price, when government "renegotiates" it's called "price fixing" and it results in shortages.

How is this all going to help us again?
