Zogby Post-Election Poll Reveals No Mandate for Illegal Alien Amnesty
Market Watch ^ | Nov. 10, 2008 | Zogby/Market Watch

/PRNewswire-USNewswire via COMTEX/ -- A nationwide survey of actual voters reveals that Americans strongly support immigration enforcement, and that less than one-third of Obama voters favor granting amnesty to illegal aliens. The poll conducted by Zogby International on behalf of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) on November 5 and 6 also found that a decisive majority of voters believe that an illegal alien amnesty would "further harm the interests of struggling American workers."

Among the key findings of the poll are:

-- Only 32% of Obama voters considered his support for amnesty as a factor in their decisions to vote for him. 67% said it was either not a factor at all, or they voted for Obama in spite of his stance on amnesty.

-- 60% of voters said reducing illegal immigration and cracking down on employers who hire them is important to them, while only 21% supported "legalizing or creating a pathway to citizenship" for illega; aliens.

-- 57% of voters stated that amnesty would harm American workers and further strain public resources, while only 26% believe amnesty would aid economic recovery and ease public burdens.

Facts are the Right is positioned terrible on this issue - In that where we do enjoy support from those "independents" or even "Democrats" on this issue, it is not an issue those groups vote on. So it does not help in getting them to pull the lever for a GOP candidate.

I believe GWB was right strategically regarding this issue of immigration and trying place the issue (and the GOP) in a position of strength. However, tactically, he went about it all wrong. Not starting with the premise of border security first and foremost and providing our base with needed assurances.

However, now, our base / party is left out, the Hispanic vote has shifted big time to the left and an even much more liberal immigration bill will be passed by the DEMs (from which the Hispanic vote will give them sole credit).

Not good. President GWB was right strategically and wrong tactically. Our base was right tactically but wrong strategically.

Considering the Democrat Congress passed the $700 billion bail-out without regard to the public opposition, anything else elected Democrats want, they get

“Amnesty” Juan McCain could probably have done a heck of a lot better on Nov 4th, if he'd run on a strong enforcement platform.
But hey, this is McCain we are talking about here, The Ayatollah of Amnesty. He'd much rather slit his own throat than fight for the enforcement our immigration laws against them “poor folks who are only trying to improve their lives”.

if the dems give amnesty they’ll have a lot more new voters that would support them. So I don’t think they’d be worried about these polls

Too bad that Juan McCain didn't get the memo.

Trying to out-Democrat the Democrat always results in a loss.

The right camdidate would have beat B. Hussein on this issue alone.

McCain was NOT the right one.

Didn’t the people of Oregon just pass a law criminalizing the hiring of illegal aliens?

we need to get the Hispanic voting block as the Dems have the black vote.

I think wee need to go after them but not at the expense of leaving borders open.
Bush went about it wrong.

If he had said right we will close all the border, as for those here illegally they go back to their country after registering here and then we will issue a visa to those who have never got into trouble, can speak English, pay back tax’s and then go through the proper requirements.
We do not give any visa’s to trouble makers at all.
The Hispanics I know want to just work , make money and live a good life, we have to let them know there is a way for them to do that but not come here and break laws to do it

I think they would have gone for that, the first thing was though was to get that border closed.

The Dems are after the Hispanic vote and if they get it all then we will lose more elections as the white vote is going down and down unless every conservative couple starts having 7 to 10 babies to bring the numbers back up

Huh? The poll said Americans do not support amnesty.

Right now the only people I have any faith in saving America is Philip Berg and Leo C. Donofrio.

Hopefully names like Roberts, Alito, Scalia, Thomas, and Kennedy think The Constitution is worth saving.

“Didn’t the people of Oregon just pass a law criminalizing the hiring of illegal aliens?”

Several states had ballot issues on this. All the enforcement ones passed.

And the still voted for BHO! A very out spoken, liberal Bush hater and lover of BHO is very much against amnesty for illegal aliens.

She says the only reason BHO was in favor of it was to get the Hispanic vote. She assures me BHO would NEVER grant amnesty for the illegals.

IF the GOP keeps moving left on this issue, they can count on losing more elections.

Don't tell jorge bush he would never buy it. He thinks mccain won.

Illegal immigration is costing the United States billions of dollars! Obama/Reid/Pelosi won’t touch the issue regardless of the damage caused because that would hurt their voting support.

We need a poll showing how many illegal immigrants voted through ACORN and for the Democrats.

Obama may not even be an American citizen:

Last time we defeated this, the only thing that stopped it was the senate. The house is now overwhelmingly dem and we’ve lost greatly in the senate. I don’t believe that congress will listen to the majority of voters on this issue.

GWB plan to a large degree did / required what you suggested - As I said, strategically GWB was right, likely for the Nation as well as the GOP itself. Tactically he went about wrong. And the reverse holds true of our base, which in the long run could be much more damaging. What we/the base wanted tactically was correct but once we didn’t get what we wanted tactically we recklessly gave away the strategic battle as well.

Yes, but a lot of Dem Senators voted against amnesty in order to protect American jobs. The Labor unions(who make huge contributions to the RATS) are totally against any amnesty that will take jobs from Americans. Its not all RATS Senators who are as stupid as Juan McCain.
